“Where are you going?” Rowan’s voice echoed through the empty front hall as he stepped out of his office to watch Mitch walk past on his way to the front door.
Freezing, Mitch hesitated, his hand hovering over the doorknob. Heart pounding, he loosened his collar as he debated ignoring Rowan and walking out the door. Swallowing uncomfortably, he reminded himself that that would probably cause more trouble than it was worth. Rowan would have to report to the council that he wasn’t following his orders, and he was still in hot water with the council even though it had been over a month at this point. At the rate he was going, he didn’t think he’d ever get his position fully restored to him. Not that he cared.
