Sarah tells her the implications of her lackadaisical attitude towards her health.
Earlier that week, she had booked a virtual appointment with a doctor who told her she needed more rest and exercise and she should stay away from junkies for the time being. If there was anything she needed, it was herself in full shape, she had a lot to do and would never relent.
She threw a can of baked beans into the shopping basket she held, she threw two more cans into the basket, the first step was pretending to eat healthily, if only they knew what so-called nutritious food does to her system. Sarah groaned and decided she had wasted enough time in the name of shopping for the day.
Her wristwatch beeped, and she switched off the mini alarm she took along with her everywhere she went. It was time to go see an old accomplice who was definitely of help in the past. She heard voices just a few meters away from her.
"Bloody humans." She cursed and advanced to ignore it but decided against it as something caught her attention.
A little boy was crying while an adult was hitting him. Sarah shook her head; it was a mother chastising a disobedient child but as she got a better view of the scene she could see that another woman was protesting just behind the scene but she was held by two people, it was like they were stopping her from moving forward.
And then it struck Sarah what was happening; the mother of the boy was held back from helping her son while the plus size was hitting her son. Sarah increased her pace and caught up with them.
"Hi, what seems to be the problem?" Sarah asked as politely as she could.
The woman who was held captive turned to her almost instantly and began to beg.
"Please, please make her stop." The woman begged.
Sarah's heart skipped a beat, a mother was pleading for the safety of her son.
"Please ma, I didn't steal anything." The little boy cried.
The pieces were keyed into a clearer picture. The boy was accused of stealing and he's been beaten by the larger woman while his mother is begging for her son to be released.
"Ma'am, please calm down and let go of the little boy." Sarah pleaded.
The woman momentarily looked at Sarah and hissed loudly before she resumed hitting the boy with a little whip, Sarah sighed; it was typical of wealthy women to behave that irrationally.
"My deepest apologies on his behalf, I'll pay for whatever damage he has done," Sarah said.
"Go away." The woman barked.
Sarah was getting pissed off.
"Why are you hitting a minority publicly? You could be sued for assault and harassment!" Sarah yelled.
The woman ceased hitting the little boy and stared at Sarah. She was taken aback by the girl's courage but she was quick to burst into laughter. Everyone around was surprised at her attitude.
"Who the hell do you think you are to stop and threaten me?" The woman asked.
"I am Sarah and the last time I checked, I still have the right to voice out my opinions." Sarah threw back.
"Do you know who I am? Do you know who my husband is?" The woman questioned.
Sarah scoffed.
"No, I don't, tell me exactly who you are." Sarah mocked. The woman took the opportunity as a queue to boast of her status.
"I am Madeline Ferdinand, wife to the famous billionaire Ferdinand." The woman boasted.
Sarah frowned, the name Ferdinand rang a bell as he was one of the top business tycoons in town, she had been keeping tabs on him lately due to the complaints that he was oppressing the less privileged and took joy in involvement in corrupt practices.
"Oh, Ferdinand, I see, may I remind you that your husband is a prime suspect in the embezzlement of funds meant for an orphanage he was supposed to be managing? And as we speak, he is under house arrest. I wonder why his wife is out here in public harassing minorities.
Madeline was shocked by the strange woman's words. Her husband's house arrest was kept a secret from the public as she had lied to everyone who cared to listen that he was on vacation. No suggestions. The fact that a woman she met at a supermarket knew about this classified secret made her wonder who she was.
"Who are you to slander my husband?" Madeline barked.
Sarah smirked.
"Let me guess, he's on a vacation?" Sarah mocked.
Madeline's face turned red as she saw her secret had been revealed.
"Do Do.... Do you know the implications of your words and actions? I could Sue for defamation of character!" Madeline threatened.
"Go ahead and do just that and you seem to be forgetting that I could also sue you for infringement of fundamental human rights and harassment." Sarah retorted.
"He isn't human! He's a werewolf!" Madeline complained.
Sarah's gaze softened as the realization dawned on her that the little boy was human. She began to notice the features she had forgotten to take note of from the onset. The boy looked handsome and his skin shone brightly, and his eye color was bright blue and had a touch of red to it. The woman was right; he was a werewolf.
"Werewolf or not, he's still a minority and you have no proof to show he stole from you, release him and apologize to the boy else you'd end up like your husband," Sarah said emotionlessly.
Madeline grumbled and muttered sorry to her victims before she scurried away with her guards. Sarah didn't wait for the boy and his mother to thank her before storming out of the place. She felt suffocated.
"I certainly oppose the motion! Werewolves are also humans!" a loud voice declared.
"Half-human David, learn your facts well." Another interjected.
"Half or not, they still live and have lived in them just like we do; why should we agree to these senseless and brutal means?" David argued.
"Are you trying to say the committee is senseless? Mind your tongue, David." Marvin cautioned.
David's voice toned down a bit.
"I'm sorry your honor, but this is not acceptable, it is inhumane!" David insisted.
"So are the creatures in question; they are far from anything human. You should quit trying to defend them because it will only bring you trouble," Nolan insisted.
"When did their existence begin to pose a threat to us?"
"Since they began to kill us."
"Kill us? You mean the other way round, right?"
"Mind your tongue, David!"
"I will when you explain this mentality of yours to me! What the hell is wrong with you?"
"They're a threat to us and soon it will get out of hand. This is what we should avoid. There are no other means to do this. Please try to understand that."
"I do understand that just a few years back you opened fire on some of them in their habitats. Isn't that controlling the population enough for you?"
"We didn't just open fire on them as we had warned them to vacate the premises as it was on government property and it was needed for a project and they declined, proving that they owned the place, so we did what was inevitable."
"And what did you do with the land stained with their blood? The land is wasted and nothing has been done on it, you call that usage?"
"It has been used for government research!"
"Hilarious, so a little poultry is now government research?"
"That's not the point, David, we did what must be done and that's exactly what we're doing again."
"You're not controlling anything, you're only trying to annihilate them, but why?"
"Because they are a threat! They are not fit to live freely among humans."
"Then let them go! Leave them to wander freely into the wild and you'll never hear from them again."
"That would be very foolish, David. What if they plan a conspiracy and then return with the modern knowledge we have provided them and usurp the government?"
"Why do you think worse of these people? If they wanted to, they would have done that a long time ago. Do you think your bullets and armed men are a match for them? They are supernaturals!"
"That's my point! They are stronger than us, hence. We must keep them under our control at all times, we can't risk the lives of millions of people for them."
"We're not risking their lives, give them a chance to live."
"That's what we're trying to do!"
"You call capturing them all and using them as lab rats for experiments controlling the population? That's inhumane, you're trying to make their race go extinct."
"Who needs such mythical creatures?"
"David, all of you enough!" The president roared.
They all mellowed down and murmured silently, the atmosphere was already tense as it was ten against one; all the top government officials against David.
"There is nothing that will stop our plans and decision, I want you all to know that whatever decision we make is for the betterment of the people, we cannot have these night crawling, shape-shifting creatures in our midst and feel safe if war arises then they would never think twice before wiping us all out at once hence we need to ensure our safety and secure the future of our children, in accordance to the agreement made in this council I have decided that the werewolves would hence be stripped of every equal right with we humans." The president said and paused as if to let his words sink into the ears of his listeners.
After a few seconds of silence, he proceeded.
"It has come to my knowledge that the medical and infrastructure team has been working relentlessly for years to build the necessary facilities to enclose the recalcitrant and rebellious werewolves for the safety of the country and an official decree will be released that all werewolves would henceforth cease to have equal rights with humans, we will do to them as we deem fit, we will not sit and await them to launch an attack on us, we will do that first." The president announced.
There were jeerings and clapping from the people at the round table and David was swollen.
"Let it be known that anyone who dares disobey this official decree will be punished." The president added and turned to David.
"And by anyone, I mean anyone not distinguishing between werewolves and humans alike, I have called this secret meeting so we can come to a conclusion which I am sure everyone is in support of." The president said conclusively.
"And none of the words we've spoken here concerning our real intentions behind this new law must be leaked to the public, you do know what I mean by that." The president said.
They all nodded their heads in agreement and clapped for the president. Their plan had worked. At the far corner was a woman in her early forties; the corner of her lips curled into a wicked smile as the bill she had passed became a law.
The woman took out a phone from her pocket, she dialed a number and the receiver picked up at the first ring.
"Hello." She said into the phone.
"How was it?" The other person asked.
"It's a law now, make the necessary preparations." She said quietly and hung up.
She watched as the men celebrated what was the beginning of their victory against the werewolves, the door opened and refreshments were served which was, of course, a five-course meal, a waiter passed by her holding a tray of the most expensive wine, and she took a glass from the tray and gingerly sipped the content.
