Chapter 10“ENTERTAINING FOREIGNERS IN YOUR bed now,” Avxhiu heard the woman mutter, as she and Mayer stepped outside. The housewife from upstairs gave them a malicious look; the story suited her well enough.
The family upstairs wanted to take over Avxhiu’s store for the stepson and his wife. Her husband was the trainer of the Tirana soccer team, a well-connected communist who had traveled abroad. People like that stopped at nothing. Forever dropping dirty suggestions, he’d keep trying to get his hands on both her, and her apartment. The coach was afraid of Spiro, but that did not stop his wife from slandering her. Avxhiu ignored her and they walked downtown where a car waited with his foreign driver.
