They immediately hit a snag, as officials checked papers and cars shipside. The air in the cargo hold turned into a disgusting black smog. This prompted the drivers in newly bought old cars to keep their motors running with the headlights on. His fellow travelers seemed curiously partial to the smell of exhaust. Wallenberg opened the window and choked. He was glad for the sealed interior of the Jaguar. After an hour, a handful of cars had rolled out. The rest kept spewing.
