X - Piano

THIRD PERSON It was Snow, and she was dressed differently from a while ago. Her maroon velvet dress accentuated her slender figure. It seemed like she changed just to get Lexus’ attention. It was working. “I can play some songs, you know. Why don’t the both of you sit over there, and I’ll play… Well, what would you like to hear, Lexus?” Snow walked towards the two and held Lexus’ bicep, not even acknowledging Songnara.  “Play the best piece you have in mind,” Lexus replied stoically.  “Alright, then.” Snow smirked. Too bad Lexus couldn’t get a piece of her later tonight.  He had to focus on his mission, and he was already wasting so much time by just being there. Lexus led Songnara over to the couch where they sat next to each other as Snow placed her hands over the keys.  She began playing a song that the young vampire recognised—Nocturne OP 9: No. 2 in E-Flat Major.  Snow played gracefully, her soft hands lightly touching the keys with just the right amount of pressure. Songnara even stayed quiet throughout the entire piece. Lexus turned to his right and stared at Songnara, who was listening intently to Snow playing the piano. You could tell that it was her first time hearing the instrument in an open room. She looked so graceful and even beautiful. It was easier to notice her beauty now that she wasn’t annoying him with her perrenial loquaciousness.  The girl turned to him, and the two-faced each other, everything was silent except for the soft sound of the piano.  Lexus felt his stomach churn. What was this feeling? This feeling of nervousness and bashfulness? It was a feeling that was familiar to him.  A feeling that was long gone, until now. A feeling that he only felt a decade ago.  A feeling that he had previously felt only for Amelie.  No. It can’t be. He swore that he would only ever love one person—but could that change? “What did you think of that?” Snow suddenly asked, destroying the atmosphere with her shrill voice. Lexus cleared his throat and turned towards Snow, who was just getting up from the stool. “Oh, I loved it, Señorita! I don’t know a lot about the piano, but every bit of that piece was just perfect! The execution and the way you pressed the keys…” Songnara started, but Snow cut her off. “I was asking Lexus.” She said coldly.  “I’d like to hear the extent of miss Songnara’s opinion,” Lexus said, the corners of his mouth slightly turned up. Snow slightly furrowed her eyebrows. It was evident that she was trying her best not to look annoyed.  Songnara looked down and blushed before continuing. “Well, I think that the piece was beautiful. You played it very well, Señorita Snow.” She smiled. Snow simply gave her a fake smile back.  “I agree,” Lexus added. Snow immediately turned to him, now genuinely interested in what he had to say. “Although I do think that the pianist needs to improve as a host. You see, Miss, you treated Songnara the way a guest should not be treated. And I expect much more from a host of such lavish background. You are lucky that miss Songnara here doesn’t mind.” He remarked.  Beside him, Songnara tried to stop herself from laughing. Snow took a deep breath and huffed in annoyance. Thankfully a voice that called out, “Señorita, dinner is ready!” stopped the three of them from exchanging more remarks.  “Well, then, I guess we can all forget this light exchange and start our dinner. Oh, and just to inform you, Songnara, we’ll be having a full-course meal.” Snow remarked as she sauntered off into the dining room.  Songnara nudged Lexus with her elbow. “Thank you for what you did back there. Although I have to say, I’m quite amused by Señorita Snow’s pretentiousness. Most rich people amuse me, you know. How they’re cocky and arrogant and how they think they can buy the whole world.” She chuckled.  “And then I just think about how sad it must be for them. They probably don’t get to experience bathing in the river or hiking in the mountains. And I can’t imagine how all of this…” She gestured towards the lavish decorations in the living room. “Could ever make up for that. I always thought that the rich making fun of the poor to make up for what they lack.” Lexus sighed. He couldn’t tell her about his past, about how that was exactly how he felt for a long time. About how he felt trapped inside his large mansion, and how all the tea parties and balls bored him immensely. How what she had just said reminded him of Amelie. Instead, he sighed and nodded. “Indeed. I’m sure we can converse more in the dining room. Shall we?” He offered his arm for Songnara to hold, and she took it gladly. “Oh, how formal.” The girl chuckled. Lexus and Songnara entered the dining room as if it were a feast held explicitly for them. Snow rolled her eyes as soon as she saw them enter. At this point, she didn’t even try to hide her annoyance. The dining room was just as ornate as the living room.  The dining table looked like it was imported directly from Spain, and it had enough chairs to fit at least twenty guests. A chandelier hung from the ceiling—this family must be fond of chandeliers. Monet’s Déjeuner sur l'herbe was displayed on the wall next to a tall grandfather clock. “Are these your guests, Snow?” A woman asked.  She resembled Snow with her structured face and slim figure, but she looked like she was slightly older. This was probably Señora Celes, the owner of the hacienda that Lexus was working at. “Yes, mother. This is Lexus and Songnara.” Snow replied.  “I see.” Señora, Celes nodded. “Please, sit.” She gestured towards two vacant seats beside her.  Lexus first pulled a seat out for Songnara, and afterwards, he sat down himself. “What a gentleman. And an interesting choice of clothes. Tell me, Snow, why did you bring impromptu guests into our house? I didn’t have time to have the special china washed, and now we dare to serve them the same meal that we have every day.” Snow’s mother asked.  Sognara’s eyes widened. She was probably surprised that this family had such lavish meals every day. “Well, you see, mother, they were soaking wet, and I told them that they could change their clothes here. Then I thought, ‘why not invite them for dinner as well?’” Snow replied. “I see.” Señora, Celes nodded. “Did you two bathe in the rain?” She asked. Lexus was caught off guard.
