Chapter Forty-Two Decisions Evening had fallen on the rental where Talia maintained her vigil. With only a few operatives on site, and a private room to which she could retreat, it was actually more peaceful than back at the motel, with all its endlessly slamming doors. Still she simmered with agitation and couldn’t imagine trying to lie down. Her poor diet all day added to this upset to keep her stomach twisting. Only hourly puffs of vapor kept the nausea at bay. She supposed she ought to try to stop obsessing over Junior’s condition but she couldn’t help herself. With the woman sleeping alone below the skylight and her son no longer anywhere to be seen, Talia spent the hours most Americans devoted to cop shows and comedians glued to the boy’s transplanted computer screen.
