Chapter Four Birthday Dance The hum of the door the next Saturday night sent a wave of calm through Paul as he twisted the handle, pulled, and entered the club. He wore a collar but the filled club, after Tuesday, left him feeling less conspicuous. He weaved past people and made it to the stage. Candy, who he’d first met the Tuesday before—who had giggled at him as he fetched water for Destiny—appeared nervous dancing in front of such a large crowd. She didn’t even seem to notice him and finished both her dances without approaching him. Destiny flashed about the room but Paul didn’t get to speak to her until more than an hour passed and she was called onto the stage, and even then, she only danced for him one of the two songs.
