The moment Diego introduced Layla and Scarlett as my stepbrothers’ cousins, I knew their presence wasn’t going to make my life easier. Still, I forced a polite smile and attempted to welcome them.
“Let me know if you need anything while you’re here,” I offered, hoping to at least keep the peace.
Layla’s lips twitched into a small smile, though it was more condescending than kind. “How sweet of you, Mia,” she said. “But I think we’ll manage just fine.”
Scarlett didn’t even bother to smile. Her sharp gaze lingered on me for a moment before she turned away, already losing interest.
