CHAPTER THREE

I was already awake, everywhere still seemed pretty dark. I looked at my husband- Richard sleeping peacefully before I stood up to the kitchen.

Soon enough the smell of bread and coffee began to fill the spacious kitchen.

“Good morning ma’am” one of the maids greeted

“Good morning grace”

“I can finish preparing breakfast “

I shook my head slightly

“Never mind” I said calmly giving her a warm smile

I really enjoyed making breakfast and despite having so many maids I still couldn’t stop the habit .

I heard Richard coming down the stairs

Already ready huh, he’s so hardworking.

I walked towards him with a cup of coffee.

He took the coffee from me , engulfing me in a warm embrace and planting a kiss on my forehead afterwards.

I fell for this man and I never regret why.

He looked at me and smiled, but today it looked different.

Forced.

Tired.

I wanted to ask but we never let work interfere at home.

I entangled myself from his embrace and walked back toward the kitchen

“Alyssa!, if you’re late again today don’t blame me when your father leaves without you”

“I’m awake”

“You said that ten minutes ago”

“I mean it this time”.

A minute later Alyssa hurried into the kitchen greeting me , I replied without taking my eyes off what I was doing . She joined her dad on the dining table, I silently listened to their chatter smiling inwardly.

Knock knock knock.

“I’ll get it” I said as I walked towards the door giving the maids a hand signal to go back to whatever they were doing.

“A package for Mr. Richard”

Where I was standing, I went back to the kitchen.

He walked briskly back to the kitchen and sat on the dining placing the package beside him looking quite concerned.

“ I wasn’t expecting anything” he said

I narrowed my eyes towards the package, my eyes rested on a blank space

No sender.

Very unusual .

I didn’t think much of it .

I shouldn’t.

Conversations continued as Alyssa spoke about her plans for the day while Richard listened while occasionally checking the time on his watch.

I glanced back at the package

I smiled and looked away almost immediately.

I hope no one noticed

I whispered to myself

The front door closes with a soft click

Silence settles over the mansion almost immediately.

I looked through the glass panels of the balcony as Richard’s car disappears through the gates.

Not long after Alyssa accompanied by Ethan follows suit.

I catch myself smiling again

They grow up so fast.

So much has changed since I left Ethan and I’m glad he and Alyssa are getting along

A reminder

10:30 am - Children’s hope foundation board meeting.

“I need to finish reviewing these scholarship reports before the meeting” I said to myself as I turned towards the study upstairs.

Something caught my eye

Looking through the living room glass walls I saw a black sedan.

Did Richard buy a new car?

It didn’t seem brand new

Or is that Ethan’s?

I frowned trying to recall

I wanted to call the maids to ask

Hesitated

Looked back

Gone

The car was gone

I laughed a little

I think I’m imagining things

Adjusted the curtains.

And turned to leave

I suddenly felt scared

I think there’s an intruder

But that can’t be possible

This is an estate and the security is tight.

I’m glad I married the rich

I smiled and made my way up the stairs.
