The Alpha’s Curse Pain. It was the first thing Kael felt as he clawed his way back to consciousness. His body throbbed, every muscle screaming in protest, his skin burning with unseen wounds. The scent of iron and damp stone filled his nostrils. Chains rattled as he shifted, the cold metal digging into his wrists. He forced his eyes open, his vision hazy from exhaustion and whatever spell had been used to subdue him. But it wasn’t just the pain that haunted him. It was her scent. It lingered in the air, clinging to him like a phantom. A fragrance both foreign and familiar, like the first breath of dawn after a brutal storm. It had ignited something beastly within him, something he had spent years suppressing. His mate. A deep growl rumbled in his throat. His wolf stirred violently beneath his skin, restless and furious. Mine. Kael clenched his fists, his claws elongating instinctively before the enchanted cuffs burned against his skin, forcing him back into submission. He cursed under his breath, his breath ragged as he tried to push away the pull of the bond. He couldn’t afford this. Not now. Not ever. The heavy door to his cell creaked open. He didn’t need to look to know who it was. Vespera, his Beta, stepped inside, her boots clicking against the cold stone floor. Even without seeing her, he could sense the irritation radiating off her in waves. “You look like hell,” she said, her voice dripping with amusement as she folded her arms. “What happened to the great Alpha Kael Draven?” Kael remained silent, keeping his expression blank. Vespera was one of the few he trusted, but even she couldn’t know what was really happening inside him. But she already suspected too much. Vespera’s gaze darkened as she studied him. “There’s something different about you.” Kael tensed. “Nothing’s changed.” She tilted her head, her sharp eyes narrowing. “Liar.” She took a step closer, her fingers grazing the chains that bound him. “It’s her, isn’t it?” Kael’s jaw clenched. “You’re imagining things.” Vespera scoffed. “Am I? A new staff member arrives, and suddenly, you lose control? That’s not a coincidence, Kael.” His wolf growled inside him, the mention of Isla sending another rush of possessiveness through him. He fought to keep his breathing even. He couldn’t afford to let Vespera see just how much Isla affected him. “Who is she?” Vespera pressed, her voice sharper now, laced with something dangerously close to jealousy. “You didn’t even look at me when I walked in. You were too lost in whatever spell she’s cast on you.” Kael met her gaze with cold detachment. “Drop it, Vespera.” Her lips curled into a sneer, but she stepped back, though the tension between them remained thick. “She’s dangerous,” she warned. “If she’s the one who did this to you…” “She didn’t,” he snapped before he could stop himself. The admission felt like a betrayal to his own cause. His own resolve. Vespera’s eyes flashed with understanding, but before she could speak, the door creaked open again. The scent of sage and ancient magic filled the room, and Kael stiffened as the pack priestess, an old woman with piercing silver eyes, stepped inside. She moved with purpose, her gaze locked onto his as if she already knew the storm raging inside him. Her wrinkled face remained unreadable as she finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "You found her, didn’t you?" she said, her words chilling in their certainty. "The one who can break your curse." Kael inhaled sharply, his mind racing. He had spent years battling against the prophecy, against the chains of fate that had been set upon him before he was even born. But the priestess’s words felt like a blade, slicing through his carefully constructed defenses. He wasn’t ready for this. He wasn’t ready for her. The priestess took another step forward, her aged fingers tracing the markings on the walls as if searching for an answer that had long been written in stone. “The bond is already forming,” she murmured. “You feel it, don’t you? The pull. The fire in your blood.” Kael’s throat tightened. He wanted to deny it, but he couldn’t. The truth burned inside him, undeniable and damning. “I don’t need saving,” he said, his voice low but firm. The priestess met his gaze with knowing eyes. “Everyone who is cursed says that, right up until the moment they beg for salvation.” Vespera shifted uncomfortably beside him, crossing her arms. “Enough of this cryptic nonsense. If you know something, speak plainly.” The priestess ignored her, her focus solely on Kael. “You must choose, Alpha. Fate does not wait forever.” A bitter laugh escaped him. “I don’t believe in fate.” The priestess only smiled. “Then why are you afraid?” Kael had no answer. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken truths. His wolf howled in the back of his mind, a restless presence pacing the edges of his sanity. He had spent years reigning it in, denying it the one thing it craved more than power, more than vengeance. A mate. And now, Isla had shattered his control with nothing more than her presence. Kael gritted his teeth. He couldn’t allow it. He wouldn’t. The priestess turned to leave but paused at the threshold. “You can run from it, Kael. You can fight it. But the longer you resist, the worse the curse will become.” The door shut behind her, leaving him in the suffocating darkness of his thoughts. Vespera exhaled sharply, breaking the silence. “You need to tell me what’s going on.” Kael flexed his hands, his claws scraping against the stone floor. “It doesn’t concern you.” Vespera’s frustration was palpable. “It does if it makes you weak.” He turned to her, his golden eyes flashing. “I am not weak.” She flinched but held her ground. “Then prove it. Handle this before it destroys you.” Kael didn’t answer. He couldn’t. Because for the first time in his life, he wasn’t sure if he could handle it. His mate was here. And whether he liked it or not, the curse was no longer something he could outrun. As the torch flickered around him, he realized that the battle he had spent his life preparing for wasn’t against his enemies. It was against himself and his desires.
