Mia noticed them first at breakfast on a Monday, two girls who moved through the dining hall like they had been choreographed, sliding their trays onto the table next to Vanessa's with the kind of practiced ease that said this was not a new arrangement, and Priya leaned over and said quietly that those were Vanessa's people, had been since the second week of semester apparently, and Mia asked how she hadn't noticed them before and Priya said she had been a little preoccupied, which was fair, and the taller one with the sharp eyes and the very deliberate way of looking at people was Jade, and the other one, softer featured but always watchful, was Blair, and the three of them together had a specific kind of energy, the kind where everyone in a room eventually becomes aware of being watched without being able to say exactly when it started, and Mia filed the information away and went back to her cereal and told herself it didn't matter, Vanessa had friends, that was fine, everyone had friends, it was not automatically a threat, and she believed that right up until Wednesday when she walked into her afternoon lecture and heard Jade's voice carrying clearly across three rows of seats saying something about how some girls just had a talent for attaching themselves to situations they didn't belong in, not looking at anyone in particular, looking at her phone actually, but Blair laughed in a specific direction and Mia understood without needing it explained that she was the situation in question, and she sat down and opened her laptop and did not give either of them the satisfaction of a reaction, and later she told Priya who said that was textbook Vanessa tactics, plausible deniability, nothing you could directly confront, everything designed to make you feel slightly unstable without being able to point at exactly why, and Mia said she wasn't going to let it get to her, and Priya said that was the right instinct and also probably harder than it sounded, and she was correct on both counts, because by Friday the whisper network that Jade and Blair appeared to run with quiet efficiency had produced a version of events in which Mia had basically inserted herself into Theo and Vanessa's relationship and broken something that had been on its way to being repaired, and this version of events had reached enough people that two girls from the floor above stopped talking when Mia walked into the bathroom, and a guy from her writing seminar asked her with genuine curiosity if it was true that she had gone after someone else's boyfriend, and Mia said Theo had never been anyone's boyfriend, and the guy shrugged and said that wasn't what he'd heard, and Mia smiled and said people heard a lot of things, and went back to her room and sat on her bed and stared at the ceiling for a long moment because she had known something like this was coming, had felt it building since the dining hall on Monday, but knowing something is coming and having it arrive were still two different feelings, and Priya said she needed to talk to Theo, and Mia said she didn't want to make it a thing, and Priya said it was already a thing, someone had made it a thing, the question was whether Mia was going to let that narrative exist without her side of it, and that was a good point but Mia still waited, partly out of stubbornness and partly because she wanted to see what Theo would do without being prompted, and what Theo did was show up at the radio station on Saturday afternoon while she was there alone trying to finally understand the soundboard properly, and he knocked on the open door and said he had heard what was going around and he wanted her to know he was handling it, and she asked what handling it meant, and he said it meant he had already talked to Vanessa and told her directly to stop, and Mia looked at him for a moment and asked how that conversation had gone, and he said it had been difficult, which was the kind of answer that contained a lot of information in very few words, and she asked if he meant difficult because Vanessa had pushed back or difficult because being around Vanessa was still complicated for him, and he was quiet for a moment, which was itself an answer, and he said both probably, and she appreciated that he didn't try to make it simpler than it was, and she said she needed to ask him something directly and she needed him to answer the same way, and he said okay, and she said whenever Vanessa pulled at him, and he knew what she meant by pulled, was there still something there that responded, and he didn't answer immediately, which she had asked him not to do, and after a moment he said he thought what was still there wasn't feeling exactly, it was more like muscle memory, two years of knowing someone didn't disappear because you decided it should, but muscle memory wasn't the same as wanting, and what he wanted was standing in front of him looking at him like the answer mattered, and Mia said it did matter, that was the whole point, and he said he knew, and she said she needed him to know it in a way that held, not just in the radio station on a Saturday but on a Tuesday when Vanessa texted at midnight or showed up looking a certain way at exactly the right moment, and he said he understood what she was asking, and she said she wasn't sure he did yet but she hoped he would figure it out, and he nodded slowly like he was taking that seriously instead of just agreeing to make her feel better, and she turned back to the soundboard because the conversation had reached the end of what it could do right now, and after a moment he sat down in the spare chair and asked if she wanted help figuring out the channel settings, and she said Vanessa had already explained them, and the look on his face at that was something she decided to keep for herself, small and private, tucked into the part of the day that still belonged only to her, and she pulled up the channel guide and they sat together in the small warm room while the campus went quiet around them, and it wasn't resolved, none of it was resolved, but it was honest, and for now that felt like enough to keep going on.
