Chapter 22On graduation night… We had a wonderful three years together, as friends and then as lovers, but it was coming to an end. Anne was going to med school at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and I was going back to Boston to get my PhD at MIT. We tried to make it work, to go to grad school together, or at least in the same city, but it didn’t pan out. We could have made it happen, by giving up on our first choice schools and going somewhere we could compromise on. North Carolina, maybe. If Anne had asked me to, I would have followed her to Baltimore in a heartbeat, even without admission to a school in the area, but she didn’t. I didn’t know what Anne would have done if I asked her to follow me, and I didn’t want to know. I think we both knew it was for the best. We were both too young
