The black luxury car sped through the rain-soaked streets.
Elena sat silently in the back seat, her pulse still racing from the chase.
Less than an hour ago, she had been worrying about university assignments.
Now she was hiding in a stranger's car while unknown men searched for her.
"This can't be real," she muttered.
Nobody answered.
The suited men in front remained completely silent.
Apparently, conversation wasn't part of their job description.
Outside, the city lights gradually disappeared.
The crowded streets gave way to private roads guarded by security checkpoints.
Elena pressed her forehead against the window.
A few minutes later, massive iron gates appeared.
The gates slowly opened.
Beyond them stood a mansion so enormous it looked more like a royal palace than a home.
Her eyes widened.
"No way."
The car rolled forward.
Perfect gardens stretched across the property.
Fountains glowed beneath golden lights.
Security guards stood at every entrance.
The entire estate looked impossible.
The vehicle finally stopped.
One of the bodyguards stepped out and opened her door.
"We've arrived."
Elena climbed out and stared at the mansion.
"People actually live here?"
The bodyguard didn't answer.
"Mr. Valerio is waiting."
Of course he was.
Elena followed him inside.
The massive doors opened automatically.
The interior was even more ridiculous.
Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling.
Marble floors reflected the lights above.
Expensive paintings decorated the walls.
Everything screamed wealth.
Too much wealth.
She suddenly became very aware of her wet sneakers.
A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.
"You're late."
Elena looked up.
Adrian Valerio stood near the grand staircase.
Dressed entirely in black.
Cold.
Calm.
Annoyingly composed.
As if nothing unusual had happened tonight.
Elena folded her arms.
"I wasn't aware I had an appointment."
A faint amusement flashed across his face.
Gone almost immediately.
"I assume you're finally going to explain what's happening."
"Sit."
Elena stared at him.
"No."
The bodyguards exchanged nervous looks.
Nobody refused Adrian Valerio.
Nobody.
Yet Elena continued standing.
"If you want answers from me, then I want answers from you."
For several seconds, Adrian simply studied her.
Then, surprisingly, he nodded.
"Fair enough."
He walked toward a long table.
A thick file rested on top.
Adrian opened it.
"You were being watched."
"I figured that out when people started chasing me."
His expression didn't change.
"My men intercepted one of the scouts following you."
Elena frowned.
"What?"
"We captured him after you left the convenience store."
Elena frowned.
"Captured?"
Adrian nodded.
"Where is he now?"
"Under guard."
"So he's alive?"
"Barely. He lost consciousness during the fight, but my doctor says he'll recover."
Adrian slid several photographs across the table.
"These were found in his possession."
Elena picked them up.
The first showed her leaving university.
The second showed her entering a café.
The third showed her walking home several days ago.
Her stomach twisted.
Someone had been watching her.
For longer than tonight.
Far longer.
"Who are these people?"
"We don't know yet."
The answer surprised her.
She had expected Adrian to know everything.
Apparently not.
"What do they want from me?"
"That," Adrian said quietly, "is what I'm trying to discover."
For the first time, Elena saw genuine seriousness in his eyes.
This wasn't a game.
Someone really wanted her.
And nobody knew why.
The realization sent a chill down her spine.
She lowered the photographs.
"I've never done anything."
"Most targets say that."
"I mean it."
"I know."
His answer caught her off guard.
Adrian didn't think she was lying.
Which somehow made everything worse.
If she wasn't involved...
Why was she being hunted?
Silence settled between them.
Then Elena asked the question that had been bothering her all night.
"What exactly are you?"
One eyebrow lifted.
"What kind of question is that?"
"The kind normal people ask when they're taken to a mansion protected like a military base."
A faint smile appeared.
Very faint.
"The average businessman doesn't live like this."
"The average businessman isn't me."
Not helpful.
At all.
Elena rolled her eyes.
"You really enjoy giving vague answers."
"Only when the questions are interesting."
For the first time that night, she almost laughed.
Almost.
Then something caught her attention.
A silver emblem engraved above the fireplace.
The moment she saw it, her breathing stopped.
A strange feeling washed over her.
A memory.
A necklace.
A woman's voice.
Silver.
The same symbol.
The image vanished before she could grasp it.
Elena blinked.
Confused.
Why did it feel familiar?
She slowly stepped closer.
Adrian noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
She pointed at the emblem.
"That symbol."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"You recognize it?"
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
A lie.
And judging by Adrian's expression, he knew it.
But he didn't push.
Not yet.
Instead, he reached into the file again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Then he removed a final photograph.
Unlike the others, this one looked old.
Very old.
The edges were worn.
The colors had faded.
Adrian placed it on the table.
Elena glanced down.
Everything inside her froze.
The photograph showed a young girl.
Around 8 years old.
Standing beside a woman.
The girl's face was unmistakable.
It was her.
Her.
Elena's hand trembled.
"Where did you get this?"
"It was hidden inside the scout's file."
She stared at the picture.
She had never seen it before.
Yet somehow an enemy organization possessed it.
Her chest tightened.
The woman standing beside her in the photograph looked familiar.
Painfully familiar.
But she couldn't remember why.
Fragments of forgotten memories flashed through her mind.
A smile.
A silver necklace.
Then darkness.
Gone.
Just gone.
"What is happening?" she whispered.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared in Adrian's eyes.
Not fear.
Not weakness.
Uncertainty.
Because he didn't know the answer either.
He folded his arms.
His gaze locked onto hers.
"That's exactly what I intend to find out."
The room fell silent.
Elena looked down at the photograph once more.
Then back at Adrian.
A terrible feeling settled inside her chest.
This wasn't random.
None of it was.
Someone had been watching her for years.
Someone connected to her past.
Someone who knew things she didn't.
Adrian's voice broke the silence.
Calm.
Dangerously calm.
"Tell me, Elena."
She looked up.
His gray eyes never left hers.
"Why does the organization hunting you possess a photograph of you from ten years ago?"
The question echoed through the room.
And for the first time in her life...
Elena realized she might not know who she really was.
