The Silver Emblem

For the first time in days, Elena wasn't surrounded by old documents. No dusty files. No forgotten photographs. No mysterious notes written ten years ago. She was sitting in the mansion's living room, drinking coffee and staring at Adrian. Which, somehow, felt just as suspicious. "You know," Elena said, looking at him carefully, "normal people don't look this serious while drinking coffee." Adrian glanced at his cup. "It's coffee." "Exactly." "And what is wrong with that?" "Nothing. It's just that you somehow make coffee look like an investigation." Adrian raised an eyebrow. "You're criticizing my coffee?" "I'm criticizing your entire personality." "That's a large subject." "Yes. Unfortunately, I have time." For a moment, Adrian almost smiled. Almost. Elena noticed. "There. Again." "What?" "That almost smile." "There was no smile." "You almost became human." "I regret having this conversation." She smiled. "Good. At least you admit something." --- The teasing slowly faded when Elena noticed the file beside him. A silver symbol was drawn on the cover. Her expression changed. "What is that?" Adrian followed her eyes. For a few seconds, he said nothing. Then he closed the file. "Something you should know about." Elena sat straighter. "That sentence never leads to anything good." "It usually doesn't." "Great. Very comforting." --- Adrian placed the file on the table. "The symbol is called the Silver Emblem." Elena looked at the mark again. "The same symbol connected to my mother?" Adrian nodded. "Yes." The room became quieter. Finally, after all this time, she was getting an answer. Not the full answer. But something. "What exactly is the Silver Emblem?" Adrian leaned back. "An organisation." "Like a company?" "No." "Like a criminal group?" "More complicated." Elena sighed. "Of course it is." --- "The Silver Emblem has existed for decades," Adrian explained. "They operate differently from ordinary criminals." "They don't just rely on force." "They use money, influence, and connections." Elena frowned. "So basically rich people with too many secrets?" "That's one way to describe them." "Not a good one?" "Accurate, but incomplete." She crossed her arms. "You really enjoy making simple things complicated." "And you enjoy making complicated things simple." "Because simple is better." "Not always." --- Adrian continued. "Your mother discovered something about them ten years ago." Elena's expression changed. "Something important enough to get her killed?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. That silence told her enough. "Adrian." "I don't know exactly what happened." "But I know Maria was looking into something connected to them." "And Victor?" "Victor knew something too." Elena looked away. "So everyone knew something except me." Adrian's voice softened slightly. "Because they were trying to keep you away from it." She laughed quietly. "Funny." "What?" "Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me." Her eyes returned to him. "But nobody asked if I wanted to be protected." Adrian had no immediate answer. Because she was right. --- A few moments passed. Then Elena pointed at the file. "So let me understand." "My mother investigates a secret organisation." "Victor gets involved." "They both disappear from my life." "And now, ten years later, I'm dragged into it." Adrian nodded. "Basically." She stared at him. "My life became a mystery novel without asking me." "That's one way to describe it." "Can I at least get paid for being the main character?" Adrian looked at her. "No." "Terrible system." --- Despite everything, the conversation made Elena feel different. Before, the mystery had been a wall. Something impossible to understand. Now it had a name. Silver Emblem. And names made things real. --- Later that afternoon, Adrian placed the old receipt from Victor's notebook on the table. "Harper Storage & Archive." Elena looked at it. "So after telling me about a dangerous organisation, your next plan is a storage room?" "Yes." "Your planning skills are strange." "It's a location connected to Victor." "Fine." She stood up. "But if we find another dusty box, I'm leaving." Adrian looked at her. "You say that every time." "And one day I mean it." "You haven't." "Because curiosity is my weakness." "I noticed." --- The archive building was quiet. Nothing about it looked dangerous. Which Elena had learned was usually when things became dangerous. A woman behind the desk looked up as they entered. "Can I help you?" Adrian showed her Victor's information. The woman's expression changed slightly. "You know Victor Hale?" "We're looking for something he left here." She hesitated. Then checked the old records. "Victor had a storage unit." Elena immediately looked at Adrian. "You knew that?" "I suspected." "You could have mentioned that before we came here." "I was going to." "When?" "Eventually." She stared at him. "Your communication skills need serious help." --- The storage unit was small. Inside was only one box. But this time, Elena wasn't expecting something dramatic. She had learned her lesson. Probably. The box contained documents. Old photographs. And a folder marked with a Silver Emblem symbol. Her expression changed. "Victor had their files?" Adrian carefully opened it. "Not files." "Then what?" "Evidence." --- Inside were copies of records. Names. Locations. Transactions. But one document caught Elena's attention. Maria's name. Her hands became still. "My mother." Adrian looked over the paper. Maria had been tracking something. Something connected to the Silver Emblem. Something Victor had tried to hide. At the bottom of the page was one sentence. "The truth is not hidden. It is protected." Elena stared. "What does that mean?" Adrian looked at the document. "I don't know yet." She sighed. "Your favorite answer." "It's still true." --- Before leaving, Adrian noticed something else. A photograph hidden beneath the documents. It showed Maria. Victor. And another person. But the face was scratched away. Elena immediately noticed. "Someone didn't want us to know who that is." Adrian nodded. "Exactly." "Which means?" "Someone removed information." Elena looked at him. "Adrian." "What?" "For once, I figured that out before you." A small smile appeared on her face. "Should I celebrate?" "No." "Why?" "Because you were obvious." She looked offended. "That was almost a compliment." "It wasn't." "Still taking it." --- Outside the archive, Elena looked at the folder in Adrian's hand. The Silver Emblem. Her mother. Victor. Everything was connected. But now she finally understood one thing. The past wasn't finished. It had only been waiting. And somewhere out there... Someone knew exactly what Maria had discovered.
