The Box Beneath The floor

949 Words
After Adrian and Elena left, the house became quiet again. Sarah stood alone in the living room. The old photograph remained on the table. For several moments, she simply stared at it. Maria's smiling face looked back at her. A memory frozen in time. "You always made things difficult, Maria." Sarah sighed softly. She hated keeping secrets. Especially from Elena. But some promises were harder to break than others. Slowly, she stood and walked upstairs. Past the bedrooms. Past the attic door. Toward a corner of the house she hadn't visited in years. The attic felt smaller than she remembered. Dust covered everything. Old furniture. Boxes. Memories. Sarah moved carefully through the room until she reached a section of the wooden floor. She knelt. Then lifted a loose floorboard. A small metal box rested underneath. Exactly where she had left it ten years ago. Sarah closed her eyes. Maria's voice echoed through her memory. "If Elena ever starts asking questions, give her this." Back then, Sarah had hoped that day would never come. Now she wasn't so sure. --- Across the city, Adrian sat in his office reviewing another set of records. The investigation into Victor Hale had produced very little. Which only made him more suspicious. People usually left traces behind. Addresses. Employment records. Financial history. Victor seemed to disappear after Maria's accident. As if someone had erased him. A knock interrupted his thoughts. One of his investigators entered. "We found something." Adrian looked up. "What?" The man placed a file on the desk. "Victor Hale worked with Maria for nearly three years." Adrian opened the file. Photographs. Reports. Business records. Nothing unusual. At least not at first glance. Then one detail caught his attention. Victor wasn't only connected to Maria. He was also connected to Claire. Adrian leaned back. Interesting. Very interesting. --- Meanwhile, Elena wandered through the mansion garden. The weather was clear. No storms. No rain. Just a calm afternoon. For the first time in days, she wasn't surrounded by documents and questions. The fresh air helped. At least a little. She followed the stone pathway until she reached a small fountain near the back of the property. The sound of flowing water immediately relaxed her. "You look like you're thinking too much." Elena turned. Adrian approached from the opposite path. She smiled. "That's because I am." "Fair enough." The answer surprised her. Normally he would have replied with something more serious. Today he seemed different. Less guarded. Maybe she was imagining it. --- They walked together through the garden. Not discussing investigations. Not discussing Claire. Not discussing Maria. For once, they talked like normal people. "What did you want to be when you were younger?" Adrian suddenly asked. Elena blinked. "What kind of question is that?" "A simple one." She thought about it. "A veterinarian." Adrian looked genuinely surprised. "A veterinarian?" "Yes." "I wasn't expecting that." Elena laughed. "What were you expecting?" "A lawyer." "A lawyer?" "You argue professionally." She stared at him. Then laughed even harder. For a moment, Adrian looked pleased with himself. Which somehow made the situation worse. --- The conversation continued as they walked. Easy. Natural. The kind of conversation neither had expected when they first met. Eventually Elena glanced toward him. "What about you?" "What about me?" "What did you want to be?" Adrian looked ahead. For a few seconds, he didn't answer. Then: "A pilot." Elena stopped walking. "A pilot?" Now it was her turn to be surprised. Adrian nodded. "What happened?" "My life happened." The answer was simple. But somehow it felt heavier than he intended. Elena didn't push further. Some answers carried more weight than others. --- Later that evening, Adrian received a phone call. Sarah. He answered immediately. "Is everything alright?" There was a pause. Then Sarah spoke. "I found something Maria left behind." Adrian's expression changed. "What kind of something?" "I think Elena should see it herself." His eyes narrowed slightly. "Can I ask what it is?" Another pause. "A box." Nothing more. Nothing less. A box. Yet somehow Adrian knew it was important. --- That night, Elena sat in her room staring at her mother's letter. She had already read it countless times. The words never changed. But her thoughts did. Every single time. Eventually she folded the letter and placed it inside the drawer. As she did, a memory surfaced unexpectedly. A faint memory. Small. Almost forgotten. A woman kneeling in front of her. Tears in her eyes. A gentle smile. "Be brave, little star." Elena froze. The memory disappeared as quickly as it arrived. But the words remained. Little star. She had heard them before. Years ago. The woman. Claire. For the first time, Elena remembered something clearly. Not her face. Not the details. Just those words. "Be brave, little star." A strange feeling settled in her chest. Sadness. Comfort. Loss. All at once. --- Elsewhere, Adrian stood near the window of his office. The city lights stretched endlessly below. His phone rested on the desk. Beside it sat Victor Hale's file. The photograph. The ring. The connections. Every road seemed to lead back to the same people. Maria. Claire. Victor. And now Elena. Adrian picked up the photograph once more. Something still felt incomplete. A missing piece. A detail everyone had overlooked . The answer was there. He could feel it. He just hadn't found it yet. His phone vibrated. A message from Sarah. Only one sentence. «Maria wanted Elena to have the box when she was ready.» Adrian stared at the message. Then slowly placed the phone down. Tomorrow would bring new answers. Or perhaps even more questions. Either way... The past was finally beginning to open its doors.
