Chapter 2
We shared an intimate night, but we found ourselves feeling sad even if we were beside each other. I lay my head on his stomach, and together, we stare at the dark ceiling, wondering how everything changed in just a span of a few years.
“We could leave now..” he whispered and touched my hair. “We could start in a new place, and be happy forever.”
His idea seems fun, but I don’t want to spend my life feeling guilty. He is the alpha of their pack, and I don’t want him to abandon everything just for a woman like me. If he ran away with me, he would also leave the world he used to call home.
“No, you can’t do that. Everyone looks up to you…” I whispered. “You serve as an inspiration to your pack, and I won’t be happy if they start seeing you differently because of me.”
“But if they really adore me, they would respect my decision, right?” Xander replied.
“Listen, Xander,” I whispered. “I spent the night with you since it is your wish, not because I still like you. So if you want to get back to me, it won’t happen. Please stop thinking about having me by your side. Emily wants to be with you.”
Xander didn’t utter anything, but instead, he just continued combing my hair until I fell asleep.
—
When I woke up, I was taken aback when I found my side empty. I picked up a blanket and wrapped it around my body.
“Xander?” I shouted and began walking towards the bathroom. No one was there, the reason why I sprinted towards the living room, as well as the kitchen. Still, no sight of him. He really left me this time, without any goodbye.
“Why do I feel I was betrayed?” I laughed while shaking my head. “After all, I pushed him away because it was the right thing, now why am I feeling so sad?”
—
“So, are you gonna go?” I crumpled the invitation card and drank the remaining smoothie in my cup. “Come on, don’t think too much. It is just a wedding and besides, you will come with me, right?”
“Yeah Ali, it is just a wedding.” I sighed. “But the guy right here, he is my ex. Do you expect me to appear in a wedding meant for them?”
Ali vomited all the juice she drank, making me give her some tissue. Ali is a werewolf too, but she never treated me any differently.
“What? You didn’t tell me about this?! Why did I just learn about this?!” Ali asked while looking around. “So he is the guy you are telling me about all this time?! Is that why you told me you can’t be together despite liking each other?”
“I mean, at the end of the day, I know he will get tired of me and leave me, especially if we are from different types of creatures. If I were him, I wouldn’t even choose myself. Who would like to build a family with a warlock?” I reasoned out and placed my chin above my palm. “Is it that difficult to comprehend?”
“Oh you poor thing, it must have been difficult for you.” Ali sighed. “With all kinds of creatures, you fell in love with an alpha. Wait, you told me you guys have a relationship before, right?”
“Well, yes. We don’t have any idea yet about wolves and warlocks.” I explained and stirred my straw. “We were just innocent teenagers falling in love. I hope I could go back in time and re-live those.”
“Fine, I know it will not be healthy for you to watch the one you adore, marry someone else. So, I will just search for som—”
“No, it is alright! I want to go…” I smiled. “I want to be there, I want to see him kiss her so I can finally move on.”
“You will only hurt yourself..”
“It would be better that way, so I could now move on, right? It will make me realize how different we are, and how our realities don’t match up.” i teared up and laughed. “Don’t worry about me, I can handle myself..”
Well, at least that’s what I thought.
Seeing him wait in the aisle makes me want to cry. I have always wished I could be that person, but it will only cause chaos. When I saw him smile a little as Emily arrived beside him, I almost wished to die at that moment. What’s the sense of life if I can’t be with him anymore?
For a few hours, we watch everyone celebrate and cheer for the newlyweds, and here I am, feeling anxious and heartbroken. When our eyes accidentally meet as they walk down the aisle, I can see him startled, making me hide in the crowd. I don’t want to destroy his important day. At this point, leaving should be the only option. I never wanted to cause a commotion after all. I grabbed Ali and went to the other exit, making her baffled.
“Where are we going?”
“Where do you think?” I answered and continued walking.
“I mean, that’s why I am literally asking, why are you being like a b***h?” Ali responded and rolled her eyes. “Do you feel bad? Awful? Tell me..”
“Our eyes met, and I don’t want him to feel awful seeing me there.” I gulped and looked around. “Maybe it was better if I didn’t go..”
“Hey, come on. Let’s just leave this place and start again. We can go somewhere far from this place, and we can have new jobs. In that way, you don’t have to hurt yourself every time you see each other.”
After hearing Ali’s advice, I become certain about my future. I will forget him, and start in a place where no one knows me. In that place, I am free to breathe and live as myself without fearing what others might say to me.
Not until…
I found out I was pregnant.
