Ian
Long ago when the earth was formed a caretaker was created. He was the first fae. He fell in love with the earth goddess. When she created her children, the humans, he created faeries to take care of them. In those days each human and their faery counterpart were bound together. Faeries were not meant to take care of the earth but to take care of her children. But as the humans started wrecking havoc on the earth the caretaker broke those bonds. Instead he bound the faeries to the earth goddess so they could undo the damage.
The goddess, loving her children unconditionally, designed a loop hole. When a faery met the human they were created with then they could make the choice to bind themselves with them by giving them their name. But even if they didn't make that decision the two would always recognize the others soul. There were two types of soul mates. The kind where the souls were a perfect match in every way and the kind where they were opposites. When two souls were opposite it was as if the soul had been split down the middle and was only complete when the human and faery were bound together. The bound made each of them better and stronger, but at a cost to each.
But still they should recognize each other. There was nothing in the texts that explained why Venus could not recognize me as her soul mate. Mine had immediately recognized her which was why I could never be mean or bring harm to her. She clearly did not have the same problem.
My next stop was back with Mary. As an elder in our community and someone close to Venus I hoped she would have my answers. I popped over and knocked on the door to be polite. When Mary answered she looked like I felt. Worried, anxious, upset.
"Hey Mary, I know there is a lot going on right now....are you ok?" I asked.
Mary invited me in as she said, " Oh sure dear. I'm just worried for Venus. She is volunteering to go with the faeries on their callings but we don't know that whatever killed Damien can't kill elementals."
"What?! The council agreed to this without knowing?" I yelled, running my fingers through my hair.
Mary crossed her arms over her chest and gave me a motherly look of disapproval.
"I'm sorry Mary. It's just, nothing can happen to her. I...she is my soulmate. I just figured it out last night. But she doesn't seem to feel it and now she is angry with me and I guess that is a small thing in comparison to people dying but it feels like a big deal to me..." I started rambling.
Mary led me over to a small seating area and pour a cup of tea. She slid it across the table to me. I looked into the cup at a milky pink substance.
"Tea made from the roots of the tree of life. Clears the mind." Mary answered the question on my face.
I took a small sip of the drink. It was bitter and burned my throat going down. But within minutes I was feeling more focused. Mary sat silently as she watched me finish the drink.
"Now, what do you know of soul signatures?" Mary asked.
" Well everyone has one. But other than that not much" I admitted.
Mary nodded and explained, " Well yes, everyone has one. And you are recognizing Venus's soul signature when you hear her laughter. In that moment when she feels joy it cuts everything else away and it is purely her. But those of us trained in reading soul signatures see a greater picture. You see when a faery or elemental performs magic the magic also holds the individuals signature. I have been reading Venus's magic for years. It has 3 signatures. Her earth magic holds her signature. At least most of the time. Occasionally it is the same signature as her water and air magic. But when she has an outburst of uncontrollable fire, there is an entirely different signature."
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees and quietly asked, " Are you saying Venus has 3 souls?"
Mary shook her head , "No. But she has the energy of 2 other individuals wrapped up inside of her. The 2nd one seems content to be there, as if it was given to her. But the one connected to her fire magic feels much different. All of this to say, Ian, she may have a hard time recognizing you as her soulmate because the other energies are blocking it."
"So what can I do? Youay not believe this but...I love her more than anything"
Mary let out a sharp laugh. At first I was offended, that was until she said, "I was the same way with my Anthony. I knew I loved him the moment I saw him. As far as Venus though, try courting her. Get her to fall in love with you regardless of sharing a soul."
The way she said it was as if it was the simplest thing in the world but I had no idea how I was going to pull it off. Venus was fierce and I had a strong feeling that she didn't forgive easily. It was going to be a challenge just to get her to talk to me.
