CHAPTER FIVE: THE MYSTERIOUS INVITATION.

🍇👑❤️‍🔥 Saturday, 18th April 2015. 9.20 p.m., Family Library, The Shamgar Ducal Mansions. Oliver Chukwu IV’s P.O.V. I leaned forward, intrigued by what Dad was up to. "And how does this help Amelia?" Here, Sir Reginald's expression darkened slightly. "Beatrice is more complicated. I have reason to believe her father's posting to Lagos is not entirely coincidental. There are whispers — mere whispers, mind you — connecting the Fu-Cheng family to Sir Alexander Balogun. Now that we have ignited the masquerade, you might have an excuse to be a timely armour bearer for the one you love in the morning of Thursday, 23rd April 2015." I straightened. "Balogun? The same business entrepreneur who has been trying to acquire our shipping contracts, but we made an instrument to secure my love?" "The very same," Dad said, tightening his jaw almost imperceptibly. "If Beatrice is, even unknowingly, a piece on Balogun's board, then her suspicions about your identity are not idle curiosity, Oliver. They are potential ammunition." "Come to think of it: I thought I had fooled her to believe I was someone else… Then we neutralise her," I said, surprising myself with the steel in my own voice. "Not neutralise," my father corrected, holding up a finger. "Redirect. An enemy exposed too early simply finds new weapons. An enemy who believes she holds power she does not actually possess becomes... predictable. Perhaps even useful." “Forgive my frustration. You and Mom never trained me that way!” He neither expressed an emotion nor said a word. I studied my father — I had spent over nine years believing I had outmanoeuvred, only to discover I had been carefully, invisibly guided the entire time. "You almost sound like you're enjoying this." Sir Reginald's laugh was short, genuine, and startlingly youthful. "Son, I built an empire from nothing but ambition and audacity. Do you imagine strategy stopped feeling like adventure simply because I now do it from behind a desk instead of a market stall?" He sobered slightly. "But I will not pretend this is without risk. Every layer we add to your masquerade is another thread that could unravel — and if it does, it will not be my heart that breaks. It will be Amelia's trust, and quite possibly Beatrice's fury unleashed with nothing left to lose." I absorbed this, the weight of it settling differently than my earlier dread had. This was not fear anymore. This was a resolve. "Tell me what you need from me," Oliver said. His father's smile returned, sharp and proud. "Confidence, first. A man who fears unmasking will always eventually be unmasked — but a man who wears his mask as though it were simply another honest face can wear it for a lifetime, if necessary." He tapped the whiteboard once more. "Second — patience. We will not force Amelia's hand, nor rush Beatrice's suspicions into confrontation. Every reveal must appear to be her discovery, never our confession." "And third?" "Third," Dad said, sliding a folder across the desk, "you will begin attending certain high society functions — not as Oliver Chukwu, heir apparent, but as Emeka, guest of a rising young engineer's networking circle I am quietly constructing for you. Amelia will encounter this version of you in rooms Beatrice also frequents. Let them both watch you navigate two worlds you appear to have built entirely on merit…” “Women’s matters have the quality of getting so complicated,” I said with disinterest. “By the way, Dad, I hope that the overconfident son of your old classmate will not try to be smart by half?” “I am closely monitoring the Lagos BMW Automobile Corporation your pseudo-friend is building for you… The Royal Secretary of Trade has directly informed me about a high-powered Business Transfer from Sir Alexander Balogun to Oliver Chukwu the Fourth. It was his secret business, but the Kingdom’s Security Service had a dossier on the business. No breaches have yet been discovered in that business. I have the original papers screened and sent to our Bank Vaults, in case of any foul discovery... The young scion knows what he wants and the value of what you seek before giving you his memo. He knew you paid more generously for the job." Oliver opened the folder, scanning invitations, guest lists, a meticulously constructed backstory bearing his photograph beneath an unfamiliar professional title. His pulse quickened — not with fear this time, but with the electric thrill of a man finally stepping fully into his own complicated, magnificent story. "Alright," Oliver said, closing the folder with quiet determination. "Let's build the legend." Sir Reginald raised his brandy glass, eyes gleaming with paternal pride and something else — the unmistakable delight of watching a worthy successor finally come into his own. "To the masquerade, my son. May it win you everything worth having. Prepare to win a heart six days from now!" 🍇👑❤️‍🔥 9.30 a.m., Thursday, 23rd April 2015. Sebastian Balogun Manor, Danny-Town, Hill-Top County. Evelyn Sterling’s P.O.V. As the morning sun painted the sky in hues of pink and gold, casting a warm glow over the sprawling estate of the prestigious Balogun family, whispers of excitement filled the air. The Balogun Manor stood as a testament to generations of wealth and power, its ivy-covered walls steeped in history and secrets waiting to be uncovered. In the heart of the manor, a grand hall with vaulted ceilings and ornate chandeliers, a small group of guests gathered for a lavish breakfast hosted by the enigmatic matriarch, Lady Genevieve Balogun. Known for her sharp wit and keen intellect, Lady Balogun was a formidable presence, her piercing gaze seeming to see through the facades of those around her. Among the guests was Amelia Sinclair, a young, wealthy, classy but humble and ambitious private detective and journalist from the city who hails from the affluent Sinclair family. She had received a mysterious invitation to the Balogun Manor. The Sinclair family is known for their philanthropic endeavours and influence in high society circles. But despite her privileged upbringing, Amelia was courteous and down-to-earth, qualities that set her apart from the usual crowd. Amelia sipped her tea as she observed the room's occupants, her clear, deep-blue eyes taking in every detail of the opulent surroundings. She couldn't help but feel anticipation and excitement at being part of such an exclusive gathering. I only came as her confidant and secret bodyguard. Suddenly, the doors to the hall swung open, and all eyes turned to the entrance as a tall, muscular figure strode into the room. It was Sir Alexander Balogun, the dashing heir to the Balogun fortune and a man of many secrets. A Knight of the Kingdom of Lagos with his striking good looks and confident demeanour, Sir Alexander commanded attention wherever he went. Sir Alexander Balogun's magnetic presence never failed to draw people in, like moths to a flame. "Welcome, dear guests," Sir Alexander announced with a charming smile, his voice smooth and velvety. "May I crave your indulgence in introducing a great contemporary European artist as a point of recognition to our special guests? She is a charming Latino who likes to hide in a corner… A friend to a charming friend. Please put your hands together as I welcome the gorgeous Evelyn Sterling,” Casanova Alexander said, and I was so shocked that I thought I was dreaming of the loud round of applause until an unusual guest — among the crème-de-la-crème of society gathered here— pulled me up so gently as if I were his girlfriend. That was Oliver Chukwu – the trendy cab driver. I was stunned, and I guess Sir Alexander did introduce more guests. When I recovered from my dazed state, I saw that food and drinks were being served, and I finally heard: “…I trust you are all enjoying your stay at Sebastian Balogun’s Manor so far. But today, we have a special surprise in store for you." Curiosity piqued, Amelia leaned in closer, eager to uncover the secrets hidden within the manor's walls. What mysteries awaited her in this opulent world of wealth and power? Only time would tell as the legacy of the Balogun family began to unfold, revealing a story of heartstrings of love and hidden riches that would captivate all who dared to uncover the truth. Amelia whispered into my ears: Novelist Stephen King once said, and it was posted in Art Writing Bookmaking, Storytelling, “I write to find out what I think.” And Carrie posted it in the Nuggets of Gold | Hidden Treasures that: “Your memoirs are a LEGACY. Putting them on paper gives friends and family (as well as yourself) the opportunity to FULLY appreciate these valuable, interesting and “uniquely yours” experiences. Writing your memoirs is different from writing your autobiography… An autobiography is the complete story of your life. A memoir is one or more stories from your life. You can write as many memoirs as you have memories… “Outline the events of the story sequentially. Then, start your story with a bit of action. You don’t necessarily have to start the story from the beginning. Weave your story and create suspense. Get your reader hooked and looking for more. Then, fill in the pieces – the background – as you go. “Here’s what I do… Close my eyes. Please take me back to the memory I’ve chosen to write about. Now, using my five senses, I recreate that scene. What do I see? What do I feel, hear, smell, taste? “I transfer those thoughts to paper. I want my readers to feel like they are there with me, experiencing what I experienced. “Writing memoirs is the easiest kind of writing – because you know the story, inside and out.” She quoted, then asked me a question: “What do you think Sir Alexander is trying to achieve by gathering us here in their Manor?” I replied to her, “You are the writer… I smell some trouble, not those expensive delicacies! And you will be saved, anyway.” “How can you always only smell trouble?” she asked me with a frown, and I replied: “Someone else who can defend you also see what I see. I think he likes you so much!” “Sir Alexander Balogun?” she asked, as she became curious, but I giggled a bit before I responded. “The mysterious Oliver Chukwu!” Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the guests, two shadows loomed in the background. Oliver Chukwu, a cunning taxi driver, a charming socialite with a penchant for manipulation, and a curious Freelance Journalist – Drew Turner — watched the proceedings with interest. Oliver had his agenda, playing a dangerous game of chicanery to find a compatible lover who would see beyond the trappings of wealth and privilege, someone who would value love above all else. Drew must discover who Oliver Chukwu is and what could help his employer bring the heiress of Sinclair News Corporation to her knees! I knew all this because I had studied the two people at close range since they dared to come closer to my principal. But I would not give the reports to Amelia until the facts were proven without a shadow of a doubt. As the morning unfolded with compelling conversations and whispered secrets, Amelia was drawn into a web of intrigue and desire that would test her beliefs and challenge her heart. Little did she know that her path would soon intersect with that of Sir Alexander Balogun in ways she could never have imagined. 🍇👑❤️‍🔥
