I was still staring back and forth at them, I couldn't believe my ears first of all and second of all it's not like I had any choice to go against this because it seems like everything has been finalised. I just stood up went to the kitchen left the cup at the counter and went back up to my room.
I had mixed emotions, I am not usually the aggressive or the shouting type. The problem is that right now I don't know how I'm feeling, angry or disappointed or what. My parents thought I couldn't find myself a man and they just decided on their own that I need to leave their lives and go live with a stranger? How's that even possible? How do loving parents do that to their daughter?
Just as I was still in my thoughts my phone rang, it was Natalie. "Dude you alive, I tried to send you a text earlier you didn't respond", she said. Natalie is always the hype person, she's got the vibe and everything and I don't know how we became friends because we're the complete opposite. "I'm sorry Nat I saw your text and I wanted to respond to you but I got held up with something", I said with an unconvincing voice. "Wait up, let me video call you", she said then dropped the call and in a few seconds she called back.
"Yaya what's happening baby? You don't look so good, are you sick?", she asked pouting. "No Nat, I just need some air right now, I have to tell you this in person", I said. "Okay what time are you coming over, this sounds serious too", she said standing up from her walking to the door, "the cleaners are here, you'll let me know when you leave home this place is a mess right now it needs to be clean". "I'll take a shower then headover but I'll let you know", I said standing up from my bed too then we said our goodbyes.
While I was in the shower I couldn't stop thinking about this whole Jonathan thing and if he knows about this or not. I finished showering then worn my trackpants and a t-shirt, I didn't feel like wearing anything tight. When I went downstairs only my siblings were in there, my little sister and my little brother watching tv, my parents are probably in their room. So I told Katie, my little sister that I'm going heading to Nat's place, she nodded and I'm not sure whether she heard or not but whatever.
I took an apple from the fridge because I was a bit hungry then my car keys and left. On the way I was trying so hard to focus on the road and I had already informed Nat I'm on my way. The moment she opened the door from her apartment she gave me a hug and rubbed my back. "You don't look good I'll bring you a strong cup of coffee", she said closing the door. I went to sit on the couch then a few moments later she came with two cups.
"Nat my parents did something I am sure they aren't even proud of", I said sitting comfortably. "I'm getting married to Jonathan", I said examining Nat's look and emotions. " What??" She looked at me confused. "Are you trying to tell me your parents arranged a marriage for you?", she asked still with a confused expression, "that can't even happen Yaya, no it must be a mistake", she said standing up and going the kitchen to get some water. "You don't even know this guy, don't even like him, what if he's a serial killer or something like that?", she said sipping the water.
I had to let her finish digesting this whole thing before saying anything else. She finally sat down and held my hand, "Maya don't let your parents bully you like this just because you don't know to defend yourself nonetheless I'll go talk to them for you" she said and I think she was getting fired up. I let out a sigh because I had some time to think about this and I tried to look at it with a positive mind.
"Nat, I'm sure they had their reasons for doing something like this", I said looking at her reaction after hearing this, to be honest she isn't letting this go anytime soon. "So are you even considering doing this Maya? You know you're too young to be binding yourself to a marriage with a stranger too", she said sitting down holding my hand, "Maya to be honest with you I'm against this whole arranged marriage thing just so you know".
Nat, I've never even dated before, don't you think my parents think I can't myself a man so they just made this to prove to me that I'm actually attractive? Nat, I've been stuck up my whole life maybe this guy might be the right guy for me who knows?", I said. "I can't believe you actually saying this right now, I can't believe that you're falling for this trap, your parents just want to get rid of you, why don't you just move in with me or get a flat to rent?" she said a bit calm this time.
"It's not a trap I know, I trust my parents they made the right decision for me and I couldn't do this without them I know Nat it's crazy but we are not getting any younger", I said knowing she hates what I just said. "Maya Maya Maya, please just come to one of my parties and you'll find a suitable guy for you not this Jonathan, wait the same Jonathan we went to college with? That guy? With the nerds and everything? Oh my I can't even think of the kids you guys would make, nerds all over", she said with a smile.
"Nat we can talk about this some other time okay? Right now I need you to update me about yesterday's party", I said completely ignoring the topic. She started talking about her new guy she met at the party and everything.
