Chapter 9

1735 Words
Kara's POV Kara closed her eyes, she felt calm and safe in James' arms, and her breathing became steady as she slowly relaxed. She didn't want to think about her nightmare or what happened with the rogues or her current relationship with James, just some peace and quiet even if it lasted for a few seconds, she would be happy. "She would have become the woman she is meant to be no matter the road she takes," Luke said as he entered the room. James immediately removed his arms that were wrapped tightly around Kara and she felt her heart sink as he left. "You're right," he said, "whether I'd accepted her or not she would still have become the woman she is. I was just young, impatient, and foolish back then, I saw a weak, helpless girl who the pack walked over instead of my mate, a queen and a powerful Luna." Kara's heart stopped as James spoke, she had no idea he felt that way. Kara felt countless emotions taking her over as she relived her memories. James had always ignored her, he would sit and watch as his friend tortured her for fun. He never cared, even after he found out she was his mate. Their being mates made him hate her even more. Tears slowly flowed from her eyes. She closed them tighter, hoping to make the memories disappear forever. Luke stood in silence as Kara cried. Why did she end up like this? She missed her parents, her family, and her pack. Kara wiped the tears from her eyes and sat on the bed. She could not bring her parents, her pack, or her home back, but she could build a new one, a new home, and a pack she could call her own. "Hey, are you doing OK?" Luke asked, giving her a napkin to dry her face. Kara nodded and thanked him. "KARA!!!" a squeal came from the door as Alexa ran towards Kara and wrapped her arms around her. "Oh, I was so worried," Alexa said as she broke down in tears. "I-I-I thought I-I-I lost y-you," she said between sobs. Kara smiled and hugged her, "I'm sorry I scared you, " she replied. "Hey", a voice said from the door. Kara stared at the door to see a frightened Jason weakly smiling at her. She smiled back at him and he released the breath he had no idea he was holding and relaxed seeing that she was doing well. "So any thoughts on who attacked you?" Luke asked. Kara shook her head, "no, but I think they were targeting James." She answered. "That makes sense, seeing all the things his father has done, it would be a matter of time before someone takes revenge," Jason replied, his anger visible on his face. "Now you went and got hurt because of him." "Hey, I barely even got a scratch, I just blacked out a few times, that's all. And besides, it's not James' fault I was the one who went searching for him", Kara said, trying to defend James. Wait, was she really defending him? After all, he had done. Why was she feeling this way now? Kara shook her head. No, she had to stop thinking about him. Within that moment, a slight knock was heard from the door and everyone turned to see who it was. James stood in the frame of the door staring at Kara. Her eyes widened as the realization dawned on her. Did James hear everything she just said? Now he is going to think she has some form of feelings for him because she defended him. "Ah..." James cleared his throat and spoke, "we have captured two of the rogues who attacked us. My men found them just a few miles outside our borders. It turns out their injuries didn't bring them far." James said as he averted his gaze from Kara, who had now become red as a tomato. "I'm on my way to question them now and I was wondering if you would like to join me?" he asked, "If you're feeling better, that is....." he trailed off as he ran his hand through his hair. Kara nodded and then followed him out of the room. They both walked in silence as they headed toward the dungeon where the prisoners were held. James stared at Kara for a few seconds before breaking the silence. "So, what did you want to tell me?" he asked. Kara started at him with a questioning look. "Ah, what are you talking about?" she asked, trying to remember what he was talking about. "At the falls, before we were attacked, you said you had something to tell me." He answered. The falls? Oh yes, that breathtaking waterfall she found James. She wanted to tell him she would accept his rejection and they could both be free of this bond. But, does she really want this to be the end? After what James said to Luke earlier, does she want to reject him? All the feelings and emotions Kara had bolted down over the years have been slowly surfacing since she stepped back on the Blue moon pack. She needs to figure out what she wants, no, what her heart needs. "Oh yeah, it wasn't important." She replied, away from him. James stopped at a gate located at the extreme back of the packhouse. He opened the door leading to the entrance of the prison. The pack prison's brick walls had vines running all over its surface while the dimly lit lights shone on its exterior, illuminating its features, and giving it an extraordinary glow. The stairs descending to the cells were damped and covered in patches of moss. The air felt cold, and eerie screams echoed throughout the prison walls. Kara could feel the hair at the back of her neck stand as she closely followed James who slowly leads the way. James abruptly stopped, but Kara, who was still busy examining the prison, did not realize this, and before she knew it, her face collided with James' back. Out of reflex, she pulled herself away quickly but slipped on the mold that was coating the floor. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the fall. After a few seconds of not feeling the cold wet floor on her face, she realized she was no longer falling. She felt an arm wrapped around her waist gripping her tightly, saving her from an embarrassing fall. She stood there, unable to move or open her eyes, her heart stopped as she felt James' hot breath on her neck. Within that very moment, it felt as if time had stopped, the eerie screams were no more, the sputter of water against the floor was silenced and all she could feel was the intense stare of the man in front of her, the man she was meant to love, to care for and to spend the rest of her life with. Within that moment, all Kara wished for, was to have James as her mate. She slowly opened her eyes and she was met with piercing blue eyes. She felt as if she was in a trance as she stared deep into its depths. "Ahem," the sound resonating from behind them snapped them back to reality, causing the earth to move once more. James pulled Kara closer to him as he straightened himself. As soon as she was firm on her feet she pushed away from James, this time cautiously trying not to slip again. "Ah sorry to interrupt," the voice said, causing both James and Kara to turn their heads toward it. Cameron stood in the frame of a cell with what looked like a nail remover in his hand, he wore a black apron that had splashes of blood on it, and a pair of black gloves on his hands. He also wore a thin-framed glass on his face that reminded Kara of a mad scientist she once saw in a movie she watched with Alexis. "He's this way," Cameron said, gesturing with his hand towards the cell. Kara and James followed suit behind Cameron, as they made their way inside the room. The room had a much brighter light, not like the corridor outside, there was a large surgeon's table in the middle of the room, and on it contained various kinds of tools, devices, and vials containing weird liquids. Kara took one of the veils off the table, inside the veil was a clear blueish-looking liquid, it swirled around in the vial as she shook it to figure out its texture. She then sniffed it, which was probably a bad idea, but she wanted to know what it was. She almost threw the vial in the air, which would have landed on James, who watched her with curiosity. Cameron caught her arm and gently took the vial away from her. "Yeah, I'll take that," he said as he closed the vial and placed it back on the table this time further away from Kara. "What was that?" she asked, rubbing her nose vigorously trying to get rid of the horrid smell. "That's the extract I got from those," he said, pointing to a set of jars filled with various animal and human body parts and organs. Kara covered her mouth as she felt the urge to throw up. "Why do you have these?" she asked Cameron, who walked across the room towards a body tied up in a chair. "Experiments," he replied with a sinister smile. "Has he spoken as yet?" James asked as he approached the rogue they had captured. "Not a word, even after I've been so kind to him," Cameron replied as he kicked the guy in his stomach, he coughed up a fit of blood and spit it on the floor. Kara could barely recognize his face with how beaten up he was, his face was swollen and coated with blood and his head hung lifelessly down his shoulders. "Well, how could he," Kara said as she approached his body. She reached her hand out and pulled his face towards hers, the guy slowly opened his eyes and stared at Kara. Kara froze as familiar brown orbs stared at her, bringing long-forgotten memories to life. "Leon?" she whispered as she stared at the man in front of her.
