"Kara, pay attention." the elderly woman called out to Kara, who was busy watching the pack's warriors practice instead of paying attention to her own duties.
"As the Alpha and Luna's daughter, you are expected to lead this pack with the most dignity and knowledge expected of a luna, so you need to pay attention." Mrs Ellen said as she scribbled something on the whiteboard.
"If I am supposed to be Luna, isn't it best for me to learn combat and how to use various weapons as well?" young Kara asked as she watched the men with a gleam in her eyes. "What if I need to defend myself and no one is there to help me, knowledge and dignity will be of no use to me then," she asked.
"When you're older you'll be able to learn all that, but for now you are expected to learn about our pack's history and relations to other packs." She replied.
Kara spotted her best friend amongst the crowd of men. He trained along with the men even though he was just eleven years old. Kara smiled as she watched him wishing she could join them.
"OK, that will be all for today, we'll pick up where we left off tomorrow." Mrs Ellen said as she collected all the books she had laid out for Kara to study. "Read this book over your free time, we'll discuss what you learned in our next session." she finished as she left the room.
Even though Kara attends school like every other child in the pack, she also had to take extra lessons and classes suggested by her parents. Kara hated it though, all she wished for was to join her friends on the train grounds as they learn various styles of fighting and forms of weapons. Maybe her lessons would be a lot more interesting if that's what she was being lectured on, she could have learned all of this at school like everyone else, Kara thought.
After Kara's tutor left she leapt from her chair and ran out the door. Within a split second, she was on the field where the pack warriors were. She spotted Leon sparing with another boy his age, they both seemed to indulge in their training. She approached them with an ear-to-ear smile on her face.
"Hey Raynor," she said as she approached them.
"Hey Kara, you made it," Raynor said as he turned to greet her. "This is Leon, he's in our grade but a different class." He said as he pointed to the boy standing beside him with hair as orange as the sun. His wolf must be as cute as his ginger hair, Kata thought to herself.
"Hi I'm Kara, it's a pleasure meeting you," she replied as her smile grew even wider.
"Yea, nice meeting you too," Leon whispered shyly.
"Can I join you guys?" Kara asked eagerly, that was the only reason she rushed to get here, so she could spare with them before dark.
"Yea sure, you won't mind, will you, Leon?" Raynor asked and Leon nodded his head.
"OK Kara, we'll go first, you can stand over there," Raynor told her.
"K," she replied.
They both readied themselves. Raynor took a step forward, gesturing for Kara to attack. Kara took that as her opening and launched at him. Every child, both boy and girl, was expected to train in combat and weaponry as soon as they reached the age of ten. Kara was one of the unlucky few who was not given that privilege.
She charged at Raynor and punched him in his stomach, causing him to stumble back. Kara had been watching the men in her pack train. Over the years, her father would secretly train her in combat and weaponry. Her father had shielded her from sparring with others because he knew she was way more skilled and powerful than others, even at her age. So she had always been excited about fighting with anyone she could possibly find, but the pack warriors had always avoided her because of the Alpha's orders, so when Raynor asked her to join them for their training she was ecstatic.
Raynor attacked Kara once more this time he managed to land a punch on her left cheek. He smiled at his victory, which was short-lived, as Kara charged at him, she jumped in the air as she neared him and landed a kick in his face and sent him flying across the field. At that time, all the other warriors had stopped their training and started watching them. Her father was amongst the crowd watching her with a satisfied grin on his face. Kara jumped at her victory and yelled as she threw her fist in the air. She ran towards Raynor, who lay still on the ground. Her smile dropped as she saw his unmoving body.
"Raynor, are you OK?" She asked worriedly, she bent down beside him and shook his body. Raynor grunted as the pain kicked in.
"Ahhh," he replied as he sat up slowly. "You have gotten stronger, are you sure you're a ten-year-old girl?" He finished.
"Haha, of course, I am silly, you're just too weak," Kara said with a laugh. Leon held his hand out to Raynor to help him to his feet.
"Do we need to take you to the nurse?" Leon asked Raynor, his knees wobbling as he tried to stand.
"No, I'm goo..." he tried to say as he started falling to the ground. Kara grabbed his hand before he could hit the ground and threw it around her shoulder.
"Let's go," she told Leon as they both took Raynor to the infirmary.
They have been inseparable ever since that day, until the unfaithful night when their pack was brutally murdered. Kara thought her entire pack was gone and she was the only survivor. But Leon is here, so that means members of her pack must still be out there.
"Leon?" Kara asked, even though his bloodied face was swollen to a pulp, Kara could recognise those longing brown eyes and that orange ginger hair anywhere. Leon coughed out a fit of blood as he tried to speak.
Kara threw her hands around his limped body and hugged him. "I thought you were all gone, I thought I would never see you guys ever again, but here you are. How could this be?" She asked a herd of questions as he tried to gather her thoughts.
"Kara, do you know him?" James asked as he approached them. Kara turned to face James with a joyous smile on her face.
"He's a member of my pack," she replied with a grin. James' eyes widened as he stared at the man's lifeless body that lay in front of him.
"He's a part of the Shadow pack? But I thought they all died?' he asked with pure shock written all over his face. He turned to Cameron, who had the same expression written on his face.
"Kara started undoing his chains as she tried to free him. Cameron grabbed her hands, stopping her from continuing.
"What do you think you're doing?" he asked.
"I'm freeing him, what does it look like I'm doing," she replied as she pulled her hand from his grip and continued to undo his chains. Cameron stepped in front of her, blocking her from Leon.
"Don't forget this rogue tried to murder our Alpha, and not only is he our enemy, but he is also a threat to our pack." He replied, "so don't let your emotions cloud your judgments." He finished.
"Not only is he my friend, but he is also a member of the Shadow pack and it is my duty to protect him.", Kara said as she grabbed Cameron's hand and twisted it around his shoulder. He yelled in pain as Kara pushed his hand further up his back. James approaches her cautiously, not wanting to upset her more than she already is.
"Kara, please calm down, he's only trying to protect his pack," James told her.
"And so am I," she replied through gritted teeth. James stared at Kara in horror as her eyes began to change to a bloodshot red. She growled as her anger rose. How dare Cameron tell her who she can and cannot protect?
"You're right, and we will help him. Maybe then we can have a full understanding of what happened to him and why he tried to attack us." James told her, as he tried to calm her down. He had never seen or heard of Kara transforming, but in her eyes, there was something about her eyes that rose fear inside of him. Kara's face relaxed as she thought hard about James' words, she nodded and released Cameron's arm, and he stumbled to the ground clutching his arm to his chest.
James' stood still for a few minutes staring into space, and Kara assumed he was contacting someone through his mind. She was never connected to their pack's mind link. Even though she lived with them for five years, they had always seen her as an outsider and not a member. She heard footsteps approaching the cell and she turned to see who the newcomers were. They were two of the pack guards she saw idling outside when they were entering the pack prison. They undid Leon's chains and placed him on a stretcher and ran out of the cell with him. Kara gave one last death glare at Cameron, who was still crouching on the floor as she left the cell to follow the guards.
"I hope you know what you're doing." Kara heard Cameron say as she left the prison.
