TOMORROW'S LAST HOPE Episode 5: The Desert of Echoes Part Three The whisper faded. For several seconds, the chamber remained motionless. Then the ancient Guardian lowered its head. "You should never have heard that voice." Liam stepped closer. "Who is it?" The Guardian did not answer immediately. Instead, it walked toward the wall where the images of the original Bearers had appeared. Seven figures stood there in silence. The Guardian raised one hand. The first image became brighter. "This was the First." A warrior carrying a radiant blade appeared. "He possessed the power of creation." The second figure appeared. "A guardian of life." The third. "A master of judgment." The fourth. "A keeper of memory." The fifth. "A bearer of storms." The sixth. "A wielder of the void." The seventh image remained dark. Liam noticed. "Why can't we see the last one?" The Guardian's voice became quieter. "Because the seventh was never truly a Bearer." Everyone exchanged confused looks. Ethan spoke first. "Then why was there a seventh symbol?" "Because the ancient people believed the seventh would complete them." Mira stepped forward. "What happened?" The Guardian turned toward her. "The seventh betrayed the others." A projection appeared above the floor. Seven warriors stood around the Gate of Echoes. The scene looked peaceful at first. Then one of them stepped away from the group. Dark energy appeared around his hands. The other six raised their weapons. The betrayal had begun. "He wanted the power hidden beyond the Gate." The projection showed the warriors fighting. "The others tried to stop him." The traitor unleashed a wave of darkness. "Their weapons could not defeat him." The Guardian continued. "So they made a sacrifice." The six warriors joined their powers. The Gate began closing. The traitor was pulled toward it. But just before the doorway sealed... He disappeared. Ethan stared at the projection. "He escaped?" The Guardian nodded. "His body did." "His power remained." Aria's voice became quiet. "Where?" The Guardian looked toward the Gate. "Beyond it." A sudden vibration interrupted them. The ancient symbols around the chamber began glowing. Dr. Hart checked her scanner. "The energy is increasing." Commander Reyes looked toward the doorway. "Can we seal it?" The Guardian shook its head. "Not anymore." Liam frowned. "Why?" "Because the Gate has recognized you." Four beams of light rose from the Bearers' marks. The ancient doorway responded. A fifth symbol appeared. Then a sixth. Then a seventh. Liam stared. "But only four of us are here." The Guardian answered, "The remaining three have begun awakening." Kai looked at the glowing symbols. "Where?" The Guardian pointed toward three different directions. One light moved north. Another traveled across the ocean. The final one disappeared underground. Mira looked confused. "Why aren't they all in one place?" "Because the Gate is searching for them." Kai suddenly understood. "If it finds them before we do..." "The enemy will know where they are." Everyone became silent. Liam looked at Commander Reyes. "We need to find them first." She nodded. "Agreed." But before they could leave, the Guardian raised its hand. "One warning." Liam stopped. "What?" "Do not trust every voice that calls you." The chamber became cold. "Some of the things you hear beyond the Gate..." "...will sound like people you love." Aria's expression changed. "Why would they do that?" "Because the Gate does not only reveal the past." The Guardian looked toward the darkness. "It reveals what you wish were true." A distant voice suddenly echoed through the chamber. "Liam?" He froze. That voice. He knew it. It belonged to someone he hadn't heard from in years. His mother. "Liam, please..." The voice sounded frightened. Aria grabbed his arm. "Don't." Liam didn't move. The voice came again. "Please come here." He took one step toward the Gate. Kai immediately blocked his path. "That's not her." Liam's expression hardened. "How do you know?" "Because the Guardian warned us." The voice changed. Now it sounded angry. "You don't believe me?" Liam's breathing became uneven. Then the darkness beyond the Gate whispered again. "You left me." Liam shut his eyes. For a moment, memories flooded his mind. A childhood home. A familiar voice. A promise he had never kept. He opened his eyes. "No." The illusion vanished. The Gate released a violent pulse. The Guardian looked impressed. "You resisted." Liam looked at it. "What was that?" "Your first test." "Then what's the second?" The Guardian pointed toward the underground city. "Survive what comes next." A thunderous crash erupted from the far end of the ruins. The floor split. Stone columns collapsed. Something huge moved beneath the streets. Mira's weapon began glowing. "The Sand Warden." The Guardian shook its head. "No." The roar came again. This time, the ancient warrior's expression became grim. "The Warden protects this place." "That sound belongs to something else." A black substance began spreading across the stone. It moved like smoke. Yet it had weight. It climbed the walls and gathered around the Gate. Dr. Hart stepped backward. "What is that?" The Guardian answered with one word. "Corruption." The black energy reached the seventh symbol. The Gate opened. A single eye appeared beyond it. It was enormous. Blue light surrounded its edges. The four Bearers raised their weapons. Liam stepped forward. "We're not running." Aria stood beside him. "Definitely not." Ethan positioned his spear. Mira raised her violet blade. The ancient Guardian moved behind them. For the first time, the four stood together as a true team. The enormous eye opened wider. A voice filled the chamber. "Seven will gather." The walls shook. "Seven will enter." The darkness expanded. "And seven will fall." Liam raised his sword. "Not this time." The eye vanished. The Gate slammed shut. Silence returned. But the Guardian knew what had happened. The enemy had spoken through the Gate. And it now knew exactly where the Bearers were. Far above them, on the surface of the desert, Nyra received the same message. She smiled. "The fourth is secured." A shadow appeared beside her. "And the others?" Nyra looked toward the horizon. "They're waking." She turned toward the rising sun. "Which means..." "...the real hunt begins now." To be continued...
