Tomorrow's Last Hope
Episode 2: The Mark of Destiny (Final Part)
The rain continued long into the night.
Military trucks blocked every road leading into Ashwood. Soldiers searched the nearby woods while emergency crews treated the injured. News helicopters circled overhead, broadcasting the attack to the entire world.
Inside the Carter home, no one spoke.
The broken windows had been covered with wooden boards, but the silence was harder to repair.
Liam sat on the edge of the couch, staring at his left hand.
The blue mark was faint again, as if it had used all of its energy.
His father finally broke the silence.
"You saved us."
Liam looked up.
"I don't even know how."
"You still did."
Before Liam could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
His father carefully opened the door.
Standing outside was the same boy Liam had seen near the supermarket.
The one with the glowing mark.
He looked about seventeen years old, wearing a black hoodie soaked from the rain.
His calm gray eyes met Liam's.
"I've finally found you," the stranger said.
The soldiers nearby immediately aimed their rifles.
"Halt! Identify yourself!"
The boy slowly raised both hands.
"I'm not your enemy."
He looked only at Liam.
"My name is Kai."
"And you don't have much time."
Liam stepped forward.
"You have the same mark..."
Kai pulled back his sleeve.
The blue symbol on the back of his hand shone brightly.
"So... it wasn't just me."
Kai shook his head.
"No."
"There are others."
"How many?"
"I don't know."
"But every Bearer is being hunted."
"Hunted by who?"
Kai's expression darkened.
"The Hunters."
"The creatures that attacked us?"
"They're only the scouts."
Liam's heart sank.
"If those were only scouts..."
"...what are we really fighting?"
Kai looked toward the dark mountains in the distance.
"The Generals."
"And above them..."
"...the King."
A cold breeze swept through the room.
Even the soldiers listening nearby fell silent.
"The King?" Liam asked.
Kai nodded.
"The being that destroyed countless worlds."
Liam remembered the Keeper's warning.
It hadn't been lying.
Earth was only the next target.
Kai reached into his pocket and removed a small crystal no larger than a coin.
It glowed with the same blue light as Liam's mark.
"The Keeper told me to give this to you."
Liam carefully took it.
The moment his fingers touched the crystal...
A brilliant light filled the room.
Visions flashed before his eyes.
He saw ancient warriors wielding weapons of light.
He saw cities floating among the stars.
He saw planets burning beneath black skies.
Finally...
He saw Earth.
Covered in darkness.
Only seven figures remained standing.
Each carried a glowing mark.
Then a voice echoed inside his mind.
"Seven Bearers..."
"Only together can the Gate be opened."
The vision ended.
Liam staggered backward.
Seven.
There were seven chosen people.
Kai caught him before he fell.
"You saw it, didn't you?"
Liam nodded slowly.
"There are seven of us."
Kai smiled for the first time.
"Then there is still hope."
Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.
Far beyond the Blackstone Mountains...
Inside a vast underground fortress...
A colossal throne stood in darkness.
A giant figure slowly opened its glowing blue eyes.
Its voice shook the cavern.
"The First Bearer has awakened."
Another shadow knelt before the throne.
"Shall we begin the invasion, my King?"
The creature's eyes narrowed.
"Not yet."
"Let the Bearers gather."
"They will bring the Gate to us."
It laughed.
The sound echoed through the mountain like thunder.
Back in Ashwood, Liam stood by the window, looking toward the distant peaks.
Only yesterday, he had been an ordinary high school student.
Now he had learned that humanity had only one year left.
That monsters walked the Earth.
That he carried an ancient power.
And that six other Bearers were somewhere out there.
He closed his hand into a fist.
"I don't know why I was chosen."
"But if I'm humanity's last hope..."
"...then I won't run."
The mark on his hand glowed one final time.
And somewhere in the darkness...
Something smiled.
End of Episode 2.
Next Episode: Episode 3 – The Seven Bearers
I really like the direction this story is taking. Episode 3 can become even bigger, introducing the other Bearers, revealing more about the Keepers, and sending Liam on his first journey beyond Ashwood. I think it will make the world feel much larger and raise the stakes even more.
