Tomorrow's Last Hope
Episode 2: The Mark of Destiny (Part 2)
Liam stared at the television without blinking.
Every news station carried the same headline:
DAY ONE OF THE COUNTDOWN
The words felt heavier than any headline he had ever read.
His father stood beside the couch, arms crossed, watching in silence. His mother held Emma close as reporters spoke with trembling voices.
"We have confirmed sightings of unidentified creatures in multiple countries," the news anchor announced. "Several military units have been deployed. Citizens are urged to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary."
The screen switched to shaky helicopter footage.
A massive creature lumbered through a forest, crushing centuries-old trees beneath its feet. Fighter jets circled overhead before launching missiles.
Bright explosions covered the monster.
For a moment, everyone watching hoped it was over.
Then the smoke cleared.
The creature was still standing.
It slowly turned its glowing blue eyes toward the helicopters.
With a single roar, a wave of blue energy burst from its body.
One helicopter spun out of control.
Another disappeared in a ball of fire.
The broadcast suddenly cut to static.
Emma buried her face against her mother's shoulder.
"Are... are the monsters coming here?"
No one answered.
No one could.
Later that morning, the government announced that all schools would remain closed until further notice.
The streets of Ashwood were crowded with people buying food, water, batteries, and medicine. Long lines stretched outside supermarkets. Some shelves were already empty.
Liam volunteered to help his father carry supplies home.
As they loaded bags into the car, Liam noticed something strange.
A boy about his age stood across the street.
He wore a black hoodie despite the warm weather.
For just a second...
The sleeve of the boy's hoodie slipped back.
A faint blue mark glowed on the back of his hand.
Liam froze.
"He has one too..."
The boy looked directly at him.
Their eyes met.
Instead of looking surprised, the stranger smiled.
Then he disappeared into the crowd.
"Liam?"
His father's voice snapped him back.
"You coming?"
"Y-Yeah."
Liam glanced around.
The mysterious boy was gone.
That evening, the town gathered around televisions and radios as the President addressed the nation.
"My fellow citizens," the President began, "our world is facing an unprecedented crisis. We do not yet understand the source of yesterday's events, but I promise you this—we will face them together."
Liam wanted to believe those words.
He really did.
But deep inside...
He remembered what the Keeper had said.
"Countless worlds have fallen."
If that was true...
Could humanity really win?
That night, rain began to fall.
A steady drizzle tapped against Liam's bedroom window.
He sat at his desk, sketching the strange symbol from memory.
Circle.
Lines.
Four glowing points.
As he finished the drawing...
The symbol on his hand suddenly flashed.
A pulse of blue light raced across the paper.
The sketch began glowing.
"What?!"
Before Liam could move, the drawing lifted off the desk.
The paper floated in midair.
Then it burst into tiny blue particles that swirled around his room like fireflies.
The particles gathered near the window.
Slowly...
They formed an arrow.
Pointing toward the Blackstone Mountains.
The same mountains where the first creatures had appeared.
Liam's heart pounded.
"Is it... trying to tell me something?"
The arrow vanished.
A loud knock echoed downstairs.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
His father opened the front door.
A frightened neighbor stood outside, soaked by the rain.
"You need to come!" the man shouted.
"Something's in the woods!"
Liam rushed downstairs.
"What happened?"
The neighbor struggled to catch his breath.
"I saw glowing eyes... dozens of them."
The room fell silent.
Then—
A terrifying howl echoed across the town.
Not from far away.
From just beyond the trees.
Emma began crying.
Another howl answered the first.
Then another.
And another.
The sound surrounded Ashwood from every direction.
Outside, every dog in the neighborhood began barking at once.
Police sirens echoed through the streets.
Military trucks sped toward the edge of town.
Liam looked at the mark on his hand.
It glowed brighter than ever before.
Somehow...
He knew this wasn't a coincidence.
The Hunters had arrived.
To be continued...
The next part will begin with Ashwood's first terrifying encounter with the Hunters and reveal why Liam's mysterious mark reacts whenever they are near. It will also introduce the first major ally who shares Liam's destiny.
