Something's wrong between Daddy and Lyra.
I noticed it first thing this morning. They're not talking. Not the normal not-talking, where grown-ups are just busy. This is the cold kind. Daddy looks at her and then looks away like it hurts his eyes. Lyra doesn't do her pretty voice anymore. She just sits there and stares at nothing.
And it's not only them.
For a few days now, everybody in the camp has been staying away from Lyra. When she walks by, people go quiet. They step back. They look at her the way they used to look at me, over by the water barrels. Like she's something you don't want to touch.
I don't know what she did. Nobody tells kids anything.
