*LAZARUS*
Maybe it’s my ego, maybe it’s these unexplained feelings I have, or it could be just that she does not want to be in pain, I honestly do not care. I don’t care if I am being used, being near her is the only thing that has calmed the anxiety I feel all the time.
I quickly change into my pajamas. And knock on her door and wait for her to allow me in…
A ding to my phone from an unknown number, I swore this would be Sorren but it’s not.
‘What a grave mistake for the young Alpha to make, taking what doesn’t belong to him. What will happen when the beautiful traitor realizes what your future plans consist of. What then?’ I feel a chill run down my spine.
“Lazarus? Are you alright?” I snap my attention to Melanie and see her in a huge TwentyOne Pilots t-shirt and pajama pants. Her silky hair is thrown into a messy bun. “You look pale as s**t! Even worse than me. Come sit down.” She is still limping but pulls on me harder than I expected her to drag me into the room. My mind is running 90 miles an hour. Do I really look that pale?
“I’m.. I’m fine Melanie. Just got a little dizzy I guess, might’ve gotten dressed too quickly is all.”
I hate the thought of lying to her but she can’t find out any of my future plans. Even the one that involves her.
“You don’t owe me an explanation, Rus. You don’t have to pretend to be my friend. But if you don’t want me to know something, just say that. Don’t lie to me. I am a big girl and can handle a little rejection, as you can already tell.” She says gesturing to all of her with a slight giggle. But the happiness doesn’t reach her eyes.
“I am your friend. There is no pretending Melanie. I just have a lot going on, and don’t want to bother you with it.” I smile, hoping she would drop it. Which thankfully she does, but I still notice the disappointing sigh escape her lips.
“Well, I have something to tell you, cause I don’t like keeping secrets.” She says as she limps to the bedside table and grabs her phone.
“I keep my phone off sometimes, I really don’t use it for anything other than an alarm, and a calculator or gps, but I turned it on to see how charged it was and I got these 2 messages.” She says, fully handing me her phone without a care in the world.
The first message reads: ‘Little traitorous slut bagged the Alpha’s Son. How unusual. That won’t last long. He will see how much of a defect you are and you will be all alone, once again. That I will see to.’ I can’t help the feeling of boiled blood that is filling my veins. These f*****g people don’t even know her. They don’t even know what happened when she was just a child but because someone told them that was the truth they believed it. What the f**k?
I thought that message made me mad, the next message was much, MUCH worse.
Fucking Sorren.
‘I made a huge mistake by not accepting you or not getting to know you at least before telling you I wanted to reject you. And I am so sorry. But you are making an even bigger mistake by choosing Lazarus over me. He will realize that you are not meant for him and that you were given to me by the Moon Goddess, and he will throw you to the side. I just want this to be my open invitation for you to come back.’
The rage I feel in this one moment is more than enough to send me over the edge and before I can catch myself, I sling the phone into the wall, shattering it into a million pieces.
As soon as I hear the glass scattering on the floor, I realize that wasn’t my phone. That was Melanie’s.
I turn to her with big eyes and start panicking.
“I am so f*****g sorry for doing that. I just. I just got so mad, I am sorry. I’ll buy you a new phone.” She just laughs.
“Why are you laughing?” Even through her pain, she is belly laughing and the sound of pure joy coming from her lips is like heaven. I need to hear that forever.
She finally calms down but doesn’t even say a word about her phone being in a million pieces and just lays down on the bed. “I needed that laugh.” She says with a few tears falling from her eyes. “I promise, Mel, I will get you a new phone. I can’t believe I let my anger get the best of me.”
She smiles, “Shhhh.” And she pats the bed next to her. I quickly lay next to her, she does something I wasn’t expecting her to do.
She lays her head on my chest.
She WILLINGLY laid her head on my chest. I feel my wolf humming in my chest. He hasn’t taken a liking to anyone since we felt our mate die…
This could be a damn good sign. And before I can even enjoy it, I fall completely asleep.
*SORREN*
I am a f*****g i***t. I sent her that stupid text mesage, thinking it would make her see that I made a huge mistake. But I sounded like a total f*****g prick..
All these years I spent hoping to find my mate, only to have found her in the one person I was taught to steer clear of. But the thing is, Lazarus was too. He was taught the same thing I was. He always listens to the rules, always follows the line to a T, never stepping across the boundary threshold. Never causing any unnecessary problems in his life or in others. Always doing what is expected of him.
But when it comes to Melanie, he really doesn't care. Maybe it's because his mate died.. Or maybe it's because he knows I want her so he's trying to lay his claim on her. We have always competed, always ran a tight race. But of course Laz always was the winner, I mean, he is the Alpha.
But what happens if she falls for the one man who actually showed her any type of kindness?
I have to up my f*****g game.
Should I send a dozen roses to her house?
‘No you f*****g moron, they will be dead before she gets home. I told you not to reject our mate. But you refused. Said that no amount of mate bond would tie you to the pack traitor.’ My wolf, Sirius, growls at me.
‘Look, I get it I f****d up. So I don’t know, maybe, just maybe, help me fix it. And get our mate back.’ I throw back at him. Berating me isn’t going to make it better.
‘I think before you make another step in her direction, you should look up all the histories surrounding her family. If she were of traitor blood, there would have been a trial on the pack books. If something really did happen, there is a note somewhere of how everything went down. Maybe then we can understand what she has gone through and connect to her on that level. A level that Lazarus won’t have with her.’ For once in my life, I have something to work towards.
Just as I open the door to leave my room, low and behold, my girlfriend that in this moment I forgot all about.
“What are you doing here?” I belt a little louder than I should. I love her to death but she is so f*****g nosey.
“Weird. I came to see you. Wanna go grab dinner?” She asks in almost a sweetener voice…
“Not now, I have something I have to go do.” I tell her, closing and locking my bedroom door in the packhouse.
She doesn’t think I can hear her as I walk away. “Must be about her.”
You have no idea.
