CHAPTER 4

1131 Words
Luther had had enough. He clenched his jaws as anger rattled his once calm exterior. “He needs to tame Laura. He had tried reasoning with her but it was obvious she was never going to bulge,” he told himself as he squeezed the doorknob and walked out. Luther remembered Vance’s warning again as he closed the door of his study behind him. Vance had always told Luther that arranged unions never ended well and that his parents were exceptional to have found love the way they did. “Could he have been right?” Luther wondered as he grabbed the receiver of his telephone and dialed Vance’s number to request a favor. *** Laura had been on her knees crying and begging Luther. “Please, Luther!” Please let him go. I promise to behave better.” She pleaded. But Luther remained adamant, “I have had enough. You can leave while your brother goes to jail.” He thundered. Luther had called Vance to have Andrew locked up in one of the toughest prisons in the city though unknown to Laura, he had Andrew on constant surveillance to ensure his safety. He intended to teach Laura a lesson. Laura’s tears deepened, “please let him go. He has been there for three days now. I don’t think he can last another day in there.” She cried, throwing herself flat at his feet. Luther had never seen such love for a sibling before, not that he knew what it was like to love a sibling as he had been an only child. His mum had suffered several miscarriages before she finally had him. Luther had arranged for some prisoners to leave threatening notes for Andrew just to scare him. The result was a repentant wife. Luther smiled smugly, “he should have done this before the wedding.” He muttered. “I will think about it,” he declared coldly. For all he cared she could be acting again, he thought. Their wedding night had been cold and lonely for him even though he had her beside him. He had promised not to touch her and he had kept that promise. He had even tried talking to her when he heard her turn over and over again on the bed but she still gave him the silent treatment. Luther decided he was going to have Andrew released in the morning, he just needed the message to sink into her properly. *** “At last he had kissed her,” Samantha whispered to herself. She had imagined kissing Luther several times but none could be compared to the real thing. Luther’s kiss had been brief but intense, leaving her frozen to the spot where she had stood. It had taken her so much to pull away from him. Samantha wrapped her hands around herself as she allowed memories of her handsome boss to run wild in her mind. “But he is married,” she reminded herself. She had always been more objective when it came to love and relationships yet Luther had managed to disarm her so easily. Luther hadn’t said a word to her since their kiss. It was like it never happened. “But why was he acting that way? Why had he kissed her? Why had he married Laura if he felt something for her? Was he just trying to take advantage of her?” She pondered with so many questions in her heart – questions that she had no answers to. Samantha had always kept one rule; that she would never have anything to do with a married man. Growing up, Samantha had watched her family suffer when her mum left her dad for another man. Samantha’s dad had been devastated at the time. He had resigned from his job at the Castro’s mansion and instead went from bar to bar, drinking himself into a stupor. One day she returned home from school to see the police at her home with some news. Her father had been drunk and had stepped in front of a speeding vehicle on the highway. He had died instantly. Samantha still recalled how broken she had felt on that day. Her life had taken a drastic turn since that day. It was with tears in her eyes that she had made that promise to herself on that day. “Yet here she was several years later, indulging herself with her married boss,” she scolded herself. Samantha paused again momentarily as she took in the tranquility from the surrounding – tranquility that had since eluded Luther’s residence since Laura came. She was glad the duo had left her all by herself in the house this morning. Luther had left early this morning for the golf club in an all-white outfit while Laura had left about an hour later to God knows where. It wasn’t that Samantha didn’t like Laura; it’s just that the woman was so unpredictable and Samantha didn’t trust unpredictable people. *** “Are you certain you want him released,” Vance enquired, not sure why his friend was taking all this pain just to tame Laura. “Yeah buddy, Laura has been crying her eyes out, promising to be the wife I had hoped for,” he said laughing. He wasn’t sure his friend believed her. “And you believe her?” Vance asked, wishing Luther would just change his mind on the spot and end things with Laura. “Hell no, but I want to. So, I’ll give her one more shot and if she fails, we are done.” Luther declared with a finality that expelled all doubt from Vance. “That’s more like it men. You deserve better. I’ll make the call now.” Vance said. There was virtually nothing he couldn’t do for Luther. Luther was the reason he was where he was today; he owed the man everything. They had both met in college, at the college library and they had immediately taken a liking to each other. A month after that Vance got defrauded of all his money including money had saved up for school before he entered college. At first, he had wanted to keep it to himself but Luther noticed something was wrong and pestered him till he came clean. By the following day, he received an unusually large amount from an unknown account that later turned out to be that of Luther’s. And as if he hadn’t done enough, Luther ensured the fraudsters were arrested and Vance’s money returned to him. Luther was his hero, his friend, and his brother. Vance heard a click on his phone, “hey Luther, I have to take this call, it’s from the prison, he said,” his voice sounding nervous.
