Taking the risk

CHAPTER 6 ERIC’S POV “Bravo!!” Nolan and Hermes cheered for me. “You have done well, so now you can leave,” Nolan said, flinging his hands dismissively at me. “Take her to the car. I’ll be joining you guys shortly. And make sure she doesn’t bleed again. I don’t want her dirty, commoner blood messing up my upholstery.” His face crinkled with disgust. My facial features were as hard as a rock as I gave a firm dismissive nod before leaving the room with Adrianna, hearing their mocking laugh ring in my head. They were laughing at me because of what I did. Because of what they made me do. As we made our way down the hallway, I noticed Adrianna was finding it hard to keep up with my wide paces. She was limping and shivering uncontrollably like one who was cold. Taking out my handkerchief, I tied the part of her elbow where she sustained that cut so it wouldn’t bleed again, before taking off my suit jacket and covering her with it. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine,” I muttered, reassuring her. But I wasn’t sure if she heard me. I let out a weak sigh and twisted a corner of my lip, a bitter frown forming on my face. Though I promised to do my best, it was sad to know I couldn’t reassure her one hundred percent. My position as a bodyguard limited me a lot. I couldn’t save the other girls, so what makes me think I could save Adrianna? Saving her won’t be as easy as it was when I first met her at the market. Gritting my teeth, I glanced around to survey my surroundings. I wished I could find a way to escape with her right this moment. Run very far away. But Hermes’s guards were stationed in almost every corner of the castle, most of them even armed with guns. I needed to be extra careful and not tip myself off. If I’m to save her, then I’ll have to take my time to think things through and come up with the perfect plan. Nolan wasn’t one to be trifled with. Even though he might act all deranged and twisted, he was undeniably smart and could spot betrayal from a mile away. Before he hired me, he made it clear that if I ever stole from him or betrayed him, he’d find me wherever I ran off to, cut my body into tiny pieces, store them in a collection box and hang my head on a spike in front of his castle as a warning to his other guards. He wasn’t joking about that. He was very powerful and had the means to do it. That is why I had to tread carefully. Biting my lip in frustration, my mind raced as we started off the castle. I wanted to carry her in my arms, but that would draw too much attention. Guards weren’t allowed to have anything to do with their master’s slave pets—even a lingering gaze was a crime that could cost you your life. I helped Adrianna, slowing down so she could keep up. Some of Hermes’s guards who saw us pass by raised a brow at the sight of her covered with my suit jacket. But none of them said a word, likely assuming it was done under one of the Alpha’s commands. Once we were outside the castle, I spat out the blood I’d been holding in my mouth, then wiped my mouth with the edge of my sleeve before guiding Adrianna into the waiting car. It was one of Nolan’s special duty cars—a sleek, armoured black SUV with tinted windows. Kane, Nolan’s second head bodyguard and special duty driver, was inside waiting for us. Once inside, I went ahead to take off the sack covering Adrianna’s head. I know I wasn’t supposed to be doing that, but I couldn’t help it. I wanted to see her eyes. I wanted so badly to know how she ended up in this castle as one of Hermes’s s*x slaves. The need to know that left me jarred and restless that I couldn’t think of anything else. The s*x slave business was a shady one. As a result, the Alpha Kings kept it only amongst themselves. I even heard it was traditional, and they held auctions where the omega girls were put up for sale based on their level of beauty. The more beautiful they were, the higher the price, with the beautiful virgins getting the highest bids. From the little knowledge I had of the business, I knew most of the s*x slaves were either kidnapped, taken against their will, or somehow deceived into becoming one. How did Adrianna fall victim? Was she kidnapped or deceived? I knew stealing in public places would put her at risk. That’s part of the reason I gave her that bundle of cash so she could stop it and learn something useful. It’s quite obvious she didn’t. Now, look at what it cost her. Who knew the level of trauma she’d suffered while in there? “Knockout, what are you doing?” Kane snapped, looking at me from the rear view mirror, his glaringly stern and watchful eyes serving as a reminder of the consequences that awaited if Nolan found out. “You know you’re not supposed to do that till we’ve reached the castle. If Alpha Nolan finds out, you’re going to be skinned alive and chopped to pieces.” “I know, I know…” I muttered under my breath. “I’m fully aware of the consequences. You don’t need to remind me.” Letting out a deep sigh, I rubbed my forehead, trying to ease the gnawing tension building up inside me. “I’ll only take a second. There is something important I have to do. Please, don’t tell Alpha Nolan, okay?” Kane didn’t say anything. He snorted, shook his head as if to disagree, and stared out his window. I took the sack off completely from Adrianna’s head, revealing her large doe eyes. They were red and swollen from all that nonstop crying, the tears making them gleam like glassy volcanic rocks. I pulled down her gag, too, gently, not to hurt her. Her chest heaved as she tried to catch her breath. As she looked at me, Kane, and at the interiors of the car, she seemed like she was lost, fear, stark and vivid, glittering in her eyes. A thousand and one questions burned at the back of my throat, but the only word that managed to come out was, “Hey…” I didn’t know if it was due to the overwhelming nervousness of seeing her so up close, or Kane’s cold, vulture-like presence. Though we wore the same uniforms and worked for the same person, we were more of rivals than allies, so I couldn’t trust him one hundred percent not to tell Nolan about this. I knew damn well that if it meant earning Nolan’s favour, Kane would sell me out without blinking. One word from him, and I’m as good as dead.
