Maya threw her phone onto the couch next to her and hit the lock button, dimming the screen's light. For the first time in days, she was too tired to check her alerts or browse social media because it was late. She had just returned from yet another exhausting day spent selecting content, answering comments, and maintaining her online persona. However, she couldn't shake the chat she had with Jake at the park.
She had always taken pride in the life she had created on the internet. She had access to possibilities she could never have imagined. It felt like a double-edged sword now, though. Her fans were there every time she checked in, analyzing every action she took and attempting to piece together the pieces of her private life. The internet appeared determined to c***k open her relationship with Jake, no matter how hard she attempted to defend it.
Maya got up and started walking around her tiny apartment, her mind a jumbled mess. She knew this was just the beginning, but Jake had been understanding and patient. She wasn't sure how much longer they could keep their relationship a secret because they were venturing into uncharted terrain. How could she reconcile her existence with a real relationship? More significantly, was it reasonable to expect Jake to carry the burden of her online life?
Once more, her phone beeped, serving as a reminder that she was unable to completely disconnect from her virtual existence. But Jake was the one sending the message this time.
"Hey, just thinking about you. Hope you’re okay."
With a sigh, Maya's chest tension subsided a little. Jake's words provided a slight but significant consolation. He had shown such patience throughout the entire ordeal. She responded with a type:
"I’m okay. Just thinking too much, as usual. Miss you."
She sat back down, bringing her knees to her chest, and pushed send. She had no idea how difficult it may be to keep up a relationship in the social media era. She wasn't sure where to draw the line because the distinction between private and public life was always changing.
Maya awoke the following morning to a deluge of alerts on her phone. She opened the screen, groggy and dazed, and looked through the never-ending barrage of warnings. Countless tags, direct messages, and comments were there. As she clicked on one of the notifications, her heart fell.
Is this your guy, Maya? How come you didn't inform us?"
A grainy screenshot from one of her most recent videos was the post's content. It showed her strolling alongside Jake, with just a glimpse of his face visible behind her. It had been shared and enlarged by someone, and it was now making the rounds among her fans.
Maya clicked through more comments, feeling her stomach turn.
"We're entitled to know his identity!"
She has kept him hidden from us. What is happening?"
Is she even a good fit for this guy?"
Uncertain of how to reply, her fingers lingered over the keyboard. This didn't feel like the previous times she had exposed bits and pieces of her life online. This was an invasion, not just a casual look into her day-to-day activities. Her fans, whom she had previously thought to be encouraging, suddenly felt that they had a right to be aware of every aspect of her private life. And she was afraid of that.
Her phone rang before her mind could properly register what was occurring. It was Jake.
"Maya, I just saw it," he stated in a composed yet grave tone. "A photo of us was posted by someone."
Maya said, her voice hardly audible, "I know." “It’s spreading fast.”
Jake gave a sigh. "Now what should we do?"
"I'm not sure," she said. "This is not what I wanted to happen. Although I was attempting to keep things secret, everyone is now aware.
"We were aware that this could happen," Jake remarked softly. However, I believe it's time to confront this head-on. Hiding will no longer be effective.
Maya's throat was constricted. He was correct, but it was horrifying to think that their relationship would be exposed to the public eye. "What happens if they reject us? What if everything is ruined by this?"
Before responding, Jake took a moment to think. It won't destroy us until we let it to. Maya, I'm not going away. However, jointly, we must determine how we wish to approach this.
Tears were welling up at the corners of Maya's eyes. The only thing keeping her grounded was Jake's unwavering certainty, but it didn't alter the facts of the case. There was no going back now that they had reached a fork in the road.
Later on in the day, Maya was sitting at her desk, gazing blankly at a Word document. She had always had a gift for language. It came easily to her to craft messages for her followers. But now she was having trouble locating the correct ones. She felt that every line she typed was too manufactured, too protective, or too vulnerable. She was willing to provide some information with her audience, but to what extent?
Her manager's message sounded on her phone once more.
"Hi Maya, I noticed the posts. This must be addressed before it becomes worse. Let us devise a plan of action. Give me a call.
Maya rubbed her temples and moaned. Her manager was correct; things were quickly getting out of control. But the thought of using her relationship to create content made her sick to her stomach. She had witnessed it with other influencers: there was no turning back once you opened up to your audience about your private life. Every aspect turned into a source of conjecture, and every disagreement or split became a matter of public interest.
But as Jake had put it so well, they were no longer able to hide.
She took a deep breath and began to type.
It's time I addressed a matter that has been on many of your minds, everyone. I want to be honest with you since you seem to have discovered a new side to me. Yes, I do have a partner. His name is Jake.
I've always made an effort to be honest with you, but there are aspects of my life that I have chosen to keep hidden—not because I don't trust you, but rather because relationships are among the sacred things. Because Jake is such a wonderful person, I want to keep what we have. I hope you can see that I'm still learning how to maintain a healthy balance between my personal and online lives.
I'm sure there are a lot of questions, and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can. For now though, I simply wanted to say I appreciate your help. I am so grateful to each one of you.
Maya took a back seat and perused the post. It was sincere, even though it wasn't flawless. After a brief pause, she clicked "publish."
The replies came in almost immediately. Some gave encouraging remarks and helpful sentiments. Others continued to press for specifics and were more demanding. However, the post had been essential, a means of taking back command of her story. After all, it wasn't a reality show; it was her life.
Jake and Maya reconnected at her place that evening. Satisfied and fatigued, they ordered takeout and settled down on the couch together.
Taking a sip from his drink, Jake continued, "I saw your post." It was enjoyable. Sincere.
"I was at a loss for words," Maya said, resting her head on his shoulder. "I think we're in it now—I didn't want to drag you into all of this."
With a gentle giggle, Jake put his arm around her. Indeed, we are. But that's alright with me, as long as we're working together on this.
Maya grinned, her burden for the day beginning to slightly lessen. She felt like she could breathe again for the first time in a long time. She believed they could handle it with Jake at her side, even if the road ahead would not be simple and there would be increased scrutiny and questioning.
