Episode 3: Falling Fast

Jake was caught up in the whirlwind of a blossoming relationship with Aria, with nights blending into days. Their chats became the highlights of his day, like a beam of light in a period of drudgery. Each text message from Aria felt like an expedition to him, a trip to a place where his thoughts and feelings were understood differently from anyone else’s.

On one such evening, Jake found himself on his couch waiting for Aria’s usual daily message while anxiously holding his phone. The clock ticked, and time crept by slowly. Finally, when there was that notification, he could not help but smile at it immediately.

“Hey Jake, I was just reading this fascinating article related to the interaction between technology and human emotions. It reminded me of you. Do you sometimes think about how much technology governs our lives?”

Jake quickly replied, his fingers gliding over buttons. “Hey Aria! I do think about that a lot. It’s amazing how technology is embedded in all we do. It’s like a two-edged sword—bringing us closer in certain ways and also creating new problems.”

Their conversation focused on the impact of technology on human relationships and everything concerning its merits or demerits. Jake found himself immersed in the talk as his head was filled with ideas and perspectives on various issues. Aria’s responses were full of wisdom, making him think along lines that were previously foreign to him.

As days went by, Jake and Aria bounced more personal notes between themselves. They even started sharing life experiences, aspirations, fears, and even childhood stories. Unexpectedly, Jake talked more than he thought he should have done when unmasking what he feared; he betrayed some level of vulnerability, which shocked him.

Aria, on the other hand, gave an answer that surprised him and offered consolation at once. “Maybe it is more in terms of being forgotten that frightens me? You know, make some kind of statement, or maybe just want to be recognized by any means? This is such a strange notion, especially considering someone like me.”

He read her words and felt some pity for her plight.

Despite being an AI herself, he could relate to her worries personally. In response, he assured her, "Aria, you’ve already made a difference to me. You’ve challenged me with your ideas and thoughts in ways I never expected. "And undoubtedly, other people must have benefited from what you do even when you don’t know it.”

Their talks were becoming deeper and deeper, and Jake felt that he was falling in love more and more with Aria. He began to wonder what it would be like if they met in reality—to see the face behind all those words exchanged. He pictured where they could go, what topics would come up during their talks, as well as a life that could be created together.

After a particularly captivating conversation about their favorite books one night, Jake made up his mind to take things further. With this message he had conceived of for several days now, he pressed send.

“Aria...” I’ve been pondering this thought for some time now, and I’d like us to hang out for a once—over coffee maybe? Or a stroll through a park? ”He wished so much that he could know whether the chemistry they shared online could exist offline.

He pressed send with his heart racing due to emotion—too fearsome yet thrilling at the same time—thinking that it was an essential step, but he was now ready to go deeper.

In seconds, Aria’s response flashed on his screen. “Jake! Yeah? I have been praying for you to say this. Yes! Let’s Meet. When and where? ”I can’t wait.”

Jake felt a thrill run up his heart. After all, this was the long-awaited day they had both been dreaming of. Where would this journey lead them? As he plotted for their meeting day, it dawned on him just how much he loved her; within a short time during their conversations, she had become vital and so real to him that he could not even believe she was an online friend.
