Chapter 22

1091 Words
EVELYN’S POV Staring at the half filled room with students on one side and the others already on their way to the Sterling home, I read out the topic for the day, passing an attendance slip to Elroy who sat in the front row. I let his fingers graze my wrist, avoiding his eyes and staring only at the paper. “Since you all have given more thought to your studies, you’ve earned your merits” I announced with a strict expression on my face They didn’t respond with happiness, I mean who would. If I weren’t a Profressor, seeing Adrian Hale in real life would be one of the best things too. **** After the lesson, I let them out thirty minutes early, packing up my things so I can get the weekend to myself when I felt his finger slide up my back. “What are you doing?” I whispered when his eyes met mine I noticed the class was already empty, leaving both of us alone in the brightly lit classroom. “Nothing” he smiled, it felt innocent but his actions didn’t. “I was thinking” he paused, leaning towards me, a grin on his face “Would you be free for dinner tonight?” He asked softly, his eyes gleaming with mischief. My heart entertained his gestures and offer but I stopped myself in my tracks. He’s just a kid Evelyn, no need to follow him up on this “I’m afraid I can’t Mr Vans, I love my Friday nights all to myself” I pulled back from his face, unfazed “And you can’t ever say such a thing to me around school grounds” I warned “Have a nice day” “I’ll call you” he whispered loud enough so I could hear as I walked out of the classroom I didn’t turn to see his face but I was sure he would wear that faint smile that would make him irresistible. After packing my things, I paid no heed to the warnings of Dean Albright who once again scolded me for trying to argue with Tiffany. Bald men sure have a lot to say As I made my way home, I felt a surge of freedom and safety. Since I had changed my phone and my location, Melvin didn’t seem to be my problem anymore, it felt unreal but my real issue was Elroy. I took off the coat from my body and stared at the wall clock ahead before noticing the piece of paper by the stove. “Made you dinner, have an errand to run, I’ll be back in two days, something urgent came up” I read aloud, trying to understand why Anya couldn’t just text me. Brushing it off almost immediately, I went to take a shower and followed the routine of having dinner, reading a book and falling right into my cozy bed when I heard my phone ring. I stared at the caller ID, it was none other than Elroy. I wasn’t going to give into the temptation, it wasn’t worth it “I’m not picking up the phone” I mumbled under my breath, neck deep into the cooking book I had purchased two days ago. It rung once again, I ignored it yet again, letting my Celine dion ringtone fill my ears once more but then it rung for the third time, that was weird. If he wanted to come up here, he just could or worse sneak through the fence. I looked at the time on my phone, it was 8:15, only forty five minutes till the gates would be closed. I picked up the phone. “Elroy..I told you I’m not coming for din..” “Eve..Evelyn” he breathed heavily “I need you..I need your help” he mumbled softly over the phone. “Wh..what happened? Where are you?!” I questioned frantically, clutching onto my phone as I put it in my other ear. “Please..I can..I can’t stop myself, they spiked my drink” he admitted, his voice almost breathless. I rushed through my room, picked out a hoodie whilst holding onto my phone “Jus..just stay where you are and tell me where you are” I responded. “I’m..” he paused “Get him” I heard in the background and the call disconnected “Hello. Elroy. El!” I yelled at the top of my lungs, there was no response. No no no! He’s in trouble, oh my God. I flung the door open, rushing out as cold sweats dripped down my face and my body lunged forward for the gates. I stared at my phone, trying to call him once again as I had done a couple more times but there wasn’t an answer until the fourth call. “El..where are you?” I asked in panic. “Silicone boulevard, I’m..in the right alley” he breathed. “I’m on my way” I answered quickly, waving down a cab and jumping right in, my phone in one hand and my purse in another. I made a stop at the boulevard and the sounds coming from the sky meant one thing, we were about to have a downpour. Searching frantically, I looked for him, his face and then I felt droplets on my skin, it had started raining “Where are you El?” I mumbled under my breath, Just when I turned, I saw his back to the wall, his eyes almost closed and his arm stretched towards me “Eve” he groaned I rushed towards him, picking him up , I threw his arm over my shoulder and took as much strength in me to take him to the nearest bustop. “You’re going to be alright” I whispered as his legs dragged on with me, trying to help me lift himself. The rain had started, droplets turned into a down pour and my body ached all over. We finally got to the last bustop and I placed him down, looking around his body to find anything. “Any injuries?” I asked as his head fell back, his hair drenched in rain and his eyes barely open “Are you hurt anywhere?” I asked again He held onto my hand, his eyes searching mine, his breathing more stable than before. “I’m fine..I’m fine now you’re here” he mumbled before his eyes closed and his body propped forward, landing on my lap.
