Chapter 27

Evelyn’s Pov The sight I had just witnessed sent shivers down my spine, but I stood at the door, Mrs Vans standing close to me, her mouth agape with shock. I mean I was shocked as well because I didn’t think that Elroy’s father would be such a man. “You dared to hit Chloe?” she asked with an anger strangled voice I somewhat let go of her hand so she could walk into her home alone. I didn’t dare to wait around, I turned to leave almost immediately when I heard her voice call me. “You’re not leaving Reeds” she said softly, her palm around my wrist I looked to see the woman who I had just been smiling with just two minutes ago, fight back tears “Chloe needs her lessons” she sniffled while Mr Van stood there, hands in his pockets. I held her hand with a reassuring look in my eyes “Alright ma’am” I muttered, squeezing her hand a little. I masked the shock on my face with a faint smile. “I’ll lead you to where she is” Elroy said, gesturing up the stairs towards her room And even though I knew exactly where she would be situated, I let him accompany me, using directions as an excuse to get away from his father. We walked in silence and just when I was sure we had gotten away from a part of the drama, I squeezed his arm “Are you okay?” I whispered as we walked For some reason, I wanted to pry. Which was most certainly not my kind of thing. Here I was caring if he was okay, knowing fully well that he wasn’t. “I’ll be fine” he shrugged with a bland expression. One that he doesn’t wear so often “Just focus on work” he added, walking off abruptly. First off, that was rude but I don’t think I have the right to oppose what he said. I mean I’m here for work not to know what happens in his family “Chloe” I called out when she hadn’t open the door after my light knocks “Chloe, please open the door” I pleaded, touching the knob and noticing that it was unlocked. And with that, I twisted the knob but when I opened the door, there she was, her body sprawled on the floor with a bruise on her arm. Even though I didn’t want to conclude, this could only mean one thing, she had tried something suicidal and no one had even noticed. Immediately, I dropped to my knees not “Someone help!” I yelled with all of the air in my lungs, picking her upper body into my arms and tapping on her cheeks to get some kind of response “Chloe!” I yelled some more, trying to shake her awake but just then Elroy rushed into the room with panic in his eyes. “What the hell is going on?” he asked, taking her from my arms and picking her with much ease. “I just walked in and I saw her sprawled on the floor” I answered with a racing heart. This was bad, really bad. ***** I ended up following them to hospital but the silence during the drive there was a little loud. Chloe was taken in by the ambulance, her mother sobbing by her side. While her father and brother had to drive behind them “What is wrong with my daughter?” her mother asked the moment the stretcher had made its way into the hospital. It all felt fast and rather tragic, so much so that I was out of place when I tried consoling mrs Vans. I know I couldn’t relate to loosing a child but I understood the grief it would cause when a person loses their loved one. “Here” I muttered slowly, handing Elroy a can of the soda he usually orders. At first, he refused by shrugging my arm away “She won’t be so happy when she sees her favorite person looking gloomy and sad. here” I offered once again, this time, he whisked it from my hand with a reluctant attitude. “She’ll be fine, she already is” I started, taking a seat next to him “Remember what the doctor said, she’ll need someone to cheer her up, so you have to stop sulking like a kid” I pinched his cheek to get a reaction and a chuckle escaped his lips. “I’m not a kid” he tapped my fingers from his cheek. “But you sulk like one” I teased, laughing just a little to lift the mood. “Do I now?” he asked with a low, alluring baritone His hand wrapped around my waist as he pulled me closer to himself, his eyes causing my breath to hitch in my throat. His face was much closer than before, I noticed how his full brows complimented the other features his face had to offer and that smirk on his lips made them seem moist and ‘kissable’ if that was a thing. We stayed in the same spot while my heart raced and my brain reprimanded my body from thinking about how good his lips had tasted before, I mean, we’re here for sister, not make out. “What are the both of you doing?” A feminine voice asked in high pitched tone.
