Chapter 28

1153 Words
Evelyn’s POV She squeezed the canned soda so hard that her nails poked holes into the can and the drink soiled her clothes, she deserved it, after all, she was the one who drugged Elroy last night. “What are you doing here?!” Elroy asked angrily He had his full focus on Tiffany who stood there almost crying about how the soda ruined her designer fit. Who even wears designer clothes to the hospital? Tiffany does I guess. “I’ll go check on Mrs Vans” I said subtly, making my way to leave. I’ve already meddled in his family matters more than I wanted to. “Is she running away right now?” Tiffany squealed, using her napkins on her dress whilst I avoided her eyes and scurried off. “Why do you always cling to her? Did she use something on you? Are you coerced?!” She asked loudly so much that I heard her speak even when I made a turn at the hall. Wow she was so loud. Moving towards the exit, I bumped into someone, my head hitting his arm, well for one, I wasn’t watching where I was going so it was more or less inevitable. “Ow” I placed my fingers on my head because I had hit whoever this was so hard that I felt a bulge on my forehead. “Oh sorry about that?” His soft baritone sifted through my ears “I wasn’t watching my steps” he apologized, holding my shoulders to steady my body and prevent me from falling. I turned to look up at him, his light blue eyes staring into mine, for a second I remembered his face and his brows furrowed, showing the exact same familiarity. “Evelyn?” He called out, his eyes widened with shock. “Ryder?” I said loudly with a smile, throwing my hand over my mouth because I made a loud noise that felt louder than Tiffany’s tantrums. He pulled me in for a hug and I didn’t resist, a smile formed on my lips as his arms went around my back, it had been forever since I saw this huge body of his. “I think that’s enough” I coughed when we had stayed too long in the same position and he pulled away slightly. “Sorry” he chuckled, leaving me slowly that it felt almost reluctant. “So..how long has it been?” He asked, my eyes lifted to see his face, he looked more handsome than before. “A decade?” I asked softly, counting with my fingers “A whole decade” “Wow..and you haven’t aged a day” he teased, I jabbed his arm lightly and he let out a soft laughter that felt like a melody. “Of course I have, I mean, look at my smile lines” I pointed to the smile lines above my lips. He leaned in slightly, his face close to mine “They fit you perfectly” he answered. We stood there, almost frozen as his gaze held mine and the awkward air and smell of antiseptic kept lingering in the atmosphere “So..what are you here for?” Scanning his body for an IV line or at least something that would give him a reason. “Oh..I’m here to visit someone” he answered, pointing down the hall “My cousin who I’m staying with” he added, turned back to me. “Well I’m here for a student” I answered, trying to draw my brain back to the reality that the unattractive flab-jawed Ryder from years ago looked like the most ripped, hottest celebrity I had seen in a quarter zipper top. “Oh” his smile faded almost immediately “Hope they’re okay?” He asked with a soft tone. “Yeah she’s fine…it’s just a bit complicated” I answered quickly “Are you heading out right now?” I needed a distraction from everything that had happened in a space of twenty four hours and a book at home would be the best thing. “Yeah..yeah, let me just grab something real quick” he answered, making his way back to the hospital room. I stood waiting, but just as I waited, I felt a chill run down my spine, like a pair of eyes just waiting but when I turned to look, there was no one there. “Hey” he called out and only then did I let myself breathe. “You good?” He asked, a palm on my shoulder. “Yeah..we can go” I said softly, gesturing to the exit. The smell of medicine and antiseptics had filled my lungs long enough to make me have chills and paranoia. “Thank you for walking me” I said calmly when he had accompanied me to the streets of the dorm. I made my way back to my room and let out a sigh of relief, thinking about the awkward situation I had met at the Vans home and if I would still get my pay for the month. **** The weekend flew by fast, maybe because it was always boring with no friends and more research. With Anya gone for the week, I had started to worry but thankfully, she kept tabs with me, enough to keep me sane. Now, it was a Monday morning and it was time for classes again. “Settle down” I said calmly when the students had made their way into the classroom with slung bags over their shoulders and purses that couldn’t handle books, the likes of Tiffany. Just as I settled my books to begin a lecture, I heard someone from the door and when I turned to look, my eyes struggled not to roll at his receding hairline. “Good morning Dean Albright” I said. “Morning” he answered sharply, turning to the students with a widened smile. “Good morning students” he said to the crowd that was halved last week. They answered in murmurs and half enthusiasm. “I’ll want you all to welcome your new professor of ethics and civilization” he announced, pointing to the door and all eyes turned to the man in a fitting brown shirt and black pair of special trousers. “Oh God” a girl retorted from the crowd. Even though it was subtle, I could hear her voice in the front row, could I blame her? It was Ryder, the sun hit his face at just the perfect angle and time to show the perfection of his features, his light blue eyes shimmering in the glow. His beauty hit the room so much that the gasps and hoarse sounds could be heard from all sides and then he turned to me. “Nice to see you again Evie” he waved.
