Chapter 8

EVELYN’S POV I didn’t even notice her on the doorway before I let such words slip out of my mouth “Yeah, she’s tutoring my sister and she missed something” Elroy improvised, his voice subtle and convincing, he sure was a great liar. Smoothening my collar, I turned towards him “The papers aren’t as heavy, but since you insist, take them to Professor Kim, Mr Folly would use this class soon” I said quickly, walking past her, her eyes followed me, the perfect scent of strawberry and mist emanated from her expensive outfit, I could see the DIOR logo just enough to know. The moment I walked out, I heard her scoff lightly “Why are you leaving?” She asked him, “She’s a professor is she not? Why would THE Elroy Vans help out a professor?” She asked, her voice having a mix of mockery and excitement, for some reason, it irked me. “I want to...” he tried to protest. Turning back, I took them off his arms without a word, this being had the stench of trouble with that expensive strawberry cologne on her skin. I let out a heavy sigh when I had gotten to the professor’s lounge, mostly because the papers felt heavy with my laptop but also because I was out of breath and maybe my nostrils were shut on the way back for fear. Who on earth was she? And why does she even have to come in at that moment? I untied my hair which was in a bun and ran my fingers through it. The worst things could’ve happened if she had eavesdropped. “So Tiffany’s back?” Someone asked, the second professor held her mug in hand, a foul expression on her face “I just saw her in the hall and those dresses which seemed to be made from Dior on her skin” “Only God knows why? After that scandal of her parents, they fled, now they’re back. It’s like hell on earth” she responded. They walked past me to their desks and it made me realize that I had just dodged a bullet. After grading the papers, my body felt too tired to work “Time to get home” I whispered, packing up my bags and waving the last professor goodbye. As I walked towards the bus stop, my mind pondered about the texts Melvin had sent the day before, making me worry, how does he keep getting my number? I thought to myself as I reread the text once again to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating. ‘Mingling with the rich now? Wait till I get you’ Reading it again sent shivers down my spine, I clenched onto my phone as I let myself sit in the almost empty bus. Just as I sighed, closing my eyes for just a second, I heard a subtle voice beside me. “Professor Reeds” he called out, I dragged my eyes open. “Elroy!” I almost screamed but composure seeped in thankfully “What are you doing on the bus?” I couldn’t phantom what I was seeing and hearing. “Miss Reeds you need to calm down” he smiled, his crisp and citrusy scent mixed with cedar registered in my mind as the zipper of his quarter zipper shirt was left open, sending tough signals to my brain. “What are you doing in a public transport?” I asked again, perplexity etched on my face “You’re not meant to be here, please” I tried to whisper, even though there weren’t many people sitting in front of us. Just then I felt his hand graze mine, I pulled back, moving to the side “You need to get off..now” “As you said, this is a public transport, I can stay if I want to stay” he snickered, moving closer to me. I didn’t like where this was going. “What about your car? Or a driver?” I questioned, my heart racing, not for his safety but mine. “It’s at the mechanics, getting an oil change” I knew for a fact that it was an excuse, lie or not. “Elroy Vans, this is inappropriate, why are you following me?!” My thoughts wandered back to his mansion, his lips, that kiss. “I’m not” he said casually “My sister just said to bring you home” “Bring me home” I paused “We only have classes scheduled for mornings on the weekends” I stated, he lifted his brow. “Oh my God that’s true” I suddenly remembered. With all this mess and Melvin, I had completely forgotten that her classes could also fall in between six thirty till eight at weekdays. “She could’ve just sent me a message” he shrugged at me, his eyes staring into my soul. Getting up from the backseat, I talked to the driver about where to make a stop before taking a different seat which was alone. The ride was short and I walked straight to the Vans mansion, my brain almost in shambles. “Good evening miss Reeds” Chloe greeted, a smile wide on her face. It made me feel safe, a word I had now commonly used even when it sounded so awkward. “Good evening” I said with a faint smile “Are you ready for the class?” I asked, following right behind her. “Mhmm..but what do you say about eating dinner before we begin” she suggested, taking my hand. From the corner of my eye, Elroy’s lips curled into a smirk. “I’ll be upstairs” he mentioned, I couldn’t tell who he was talking to “But I’ll be down just in time for dinner” “See, even brother wants to eat dinner for the first time in a while” she smiled, it made me feel warm. “I would actually like us to get to your lessons” I paused, watching the light in her eyes almost fading “But you can’t learn on an empty stomach, so I’ll stay for dinner then” I answered. “Yes” she squealed with joy. “But I have to text someone really quickly about my whereabouts” I informed her, she let go of my hand and I picked up the phone to see six missed calls from Anya and then a text. ‘Don’t bother coming home right now, someone broke in and left a note’ it read, my heart skipped, I felt cold sweat dripping down my face. There was a picture of the written note ‘I’ve found you’
