Chapter 16

EVELYN’S POV The text looked blurry, not just because my hands shivered but also because my eyes had a pool of tears waiting to pour. “Evelyn” Elroy said softly, my eyes stayed glued to the screen, my soul almost leaving my body. Does Melvin know about him? Now that he’s found me, what’s going to happen? “Evelyn” I heard in between my tears and thoughts, right beside me, he was seated, concern etched on his face, his hand warm as they held me, giving me a sense of comfort but it wasn’t enough, my tears had already flowed. Unbuckling his seat belt, he pulled me in for a hug “Are you upset because of what I said?” He asked, his body colliding with mine, my face buried in his chest. “I’m sorry I made you cry” “You..you didn’t make me cry, it’s someone else” I sobbed, pulling away from him “I have to go” I regained composure but he held onto my arm, his other hand, keeping the door closed. “Then why are you in tears?” His voice softly seeped into my ears, his concern was touching but that was what I needed to avoid, pulling someone else into my wrecked life, it’s bad enough that Anya is in the midst of this. “Nothing” I mumbled, letting myself out of the car. He followed almost immediately, trailing right behind me. “Evelyn wait!” I didn’t look back “Aren’t you even slightly curious about the stalker I wanted to talk to you about?” He blurted, I had completely gotten distracted that he was talking about that. “So I’ve gotten your attention” he had finally caught up with me, placing my hand in his, I felt my heart sink. “I’ve been watching you for a while, I’m sorry if it gave off the feeling that I had you stalked. What on earth is he even talking about “You were trying to get so far from me and I couldn’t bear it…I just couldn’t” “So you stalked me?!” I yelled, the road still empty, he didn’t try to shut me down but this had gone on for long enough. Wiping the tears from my eyes, I can’t believe I thought of him so much as to keep him from Melvin’s fiasco but he’s been stalking me? “I never want to see your face, ever again” I pointed to him “I’ll tell your father that I’m unable to tutor Chloe” “Please listen, I didn’t stalk you for myself” he responded, I moved quicker than he could draw his next breath “I know who has been following you, Melvin, right” he didn’t need to say much, he had found out, I felt my phone ring “He’s the one calling, isn’t he?” “Ho..how?” I didn’t complete my sentence. “I had noticed how tense you were, the way your smile fades when you stare at his texts” he walked closer, his scent getting stronger as he tucked a strand of hair behind my ear “I wanted to know if you had someone else, someone better that you’d push me away” his eyes felt soft as they stared at mine and my lips and then my eyes again. “I didn’t mean to hurt you” “I can’t do this right now” I looked away from him, my body fighting the urge to pull him in and tell him my truth, the scars I still have on my heart, the bruises on skin, but he’s my student. “For the discomfort I’ve caused, I’ll pay for your suite, I’ll get you better accommodation, just don’t…don’t leave me” his eyes searched mine. I couldn’t tell right from wrong anymore but my phone continued ringing and I didn’t want to look at it, he held my hand with the phone in it “And I’ll get him arrested if you want” “Since you offered, I just need enough to pay for the dorm” I said in a straightforward manner “But don’t you ever touch me or try to follow me” I warned, moving past him, first Melvin, now him, how cursed am I? **** The next day, I had asked Anya to move her things with me, I threw away my device, maybe moving all the way here wasn’t the best choice but what I do know is the best place to be right now and it’s not a motel. “It’s so nice of him to chip in” Anya said to me as we rode the first morning bus to the dorm, I sat silently beside her, “I might have to thank him for that” she added, singing his praises, I didn’t but I also didn’t tell her what he had done. When we finally got to the dorm, I settled in, placing things in the right places when I heard Anya’s phone ring “Anya…someone’s on the phone” I called her attention. “I’m in the shower” she said with a muffled voice, it sure was a stressful journey “Just pick it up” “Alright” I answered, taking my phone to my ear “Hello, Anya is a bit busy right now but she’ll talk to you soon” “Hello Evie” the low baritone came from the other end, it made my heart sink, I felt hiccups in my throat, it couldn’t be mistaken, it was him, it was his voice “Your silence tells me all I need to hear” he continued while I breathed onto the screen, dropping the phone in horror, not again.
