EVELYN'S POV
His voice caught me off guard, my name, no one else called me Evie, not Anya, not Elroy, my heart raced as my heart and brain had a conflict of whether to look at his face or to leave my groceries and make a run for it but I still had my heels on, how long would I run before my feet would start to ache?
I listened to my brain, not looking up, I pulled out my pepper spray yet again and put it in his face as quickly as my hands could move
"f**k! Evie" he yelled out in pain, his voice didn't sound too familiar, yet I couldn't shake the feeling that it was him.
I didn't wait around for him to recollect himself, I moved away from, watching him clutch his face in his palms, groaning but just when I tried to actually make a run for it
"I'm not letting you go, not again" I felt his hand on my arm
"Leave me alone!" I screamed with tears trickling down my cheeks
He sure was persistent, why wouldn't he be? He had been following me for a while. I lunged at him, using my purse as a weapon, I hit him hard on the head, not caring about the whimpers he made but he didn't budge, his grip was still tight around my arm.
"let me go Melvin, just leave me alone"
My heart raced the more time I spent trying to pry myself free when someone rushed right in front of me, taking his hand off my arm.
I turned to see Elroy, anger in his eyes, his hand twisting this man's hand.
"Evelyn... are you okay?" he asked, pushing the man away and pulling me in for a hug.
I sobbed in his arms and even though I really wanted comfort, I didn't Melvin to run away.
"Don't let him get away" I pointed to the man who was still on the ground, the pepper spray did do a number on him.
Elroy rushed at him, throwing punches even quicker than I could notice but when he brought the man to my face, I prayed for courage internally to face the man who's been scaring me for years and keeping me on my toes for the past few months but when Elroy held his face up to me, it wasn't him, it wasn't Melvin.
"Who are you?" I asked, staring at his brown eyes with a scar underneath his left eye "You're not Melvin, who the hell are you?" I asked with Elroy holding him in place.
"She's asking you a question, you'll do well to answer her or else" he paused "You'll end up in jail and I'll make sure you don't survive your time there" he threatened with a low voice but this man smiled with blood coming from his lips, probably because of the hits he sustained from Elroy's fists.
"Do you think I'm bluffing?" he asked, placing him on the wall and going at his face with even more accurate jabs, the first time, then another and another.
"Elroy, please stop" I didn't like seeing the blood which had now pooled up in his face, smeared all over his fist. "Please, you'll stain your shirt and don't waste your energy on him, he isn't worth it.
"But he stalked you" he answered, his fist in the air, ready to land yet another blow
"Please don't" I held onto his arm, fighting back my tears "We'll take him to the police, don't soil your hands with blood"
"He told me you were a softy" the unknown man breathed, I almost couldn't hear him speak "And that your reaction would be priceless" he continued, a smirk formed on his lip, when Elroy raised his fist again to punch him yet again, he coughed up a bit of blood on his face.
It didn't take long before the cops had arrived, we went down to the station, the bloodied man in cuffs as I entered Elroy's car as we followed them from behind.
"Who are you?" the police officer asked him.
"I'm the victim here" he pleaded, "I was right in front of her when she bumped" he pointed to me "And she accused me of stalking her and then her boyfriend started hitting me without listening" he said with teary eyes.
Elroy stood up to try to confront him, I etopped him with my hand to his arm, shaking my head.
"Ma'am, what he's saying, is it true?" the police man asked
I stared at him before walking over to the cop, placing my phone in front of him with the recording I had taken while the issue occurred,i didn't speak but I turned to look at him and that fake plea in his throat.
He swallowed hard "Tha..that's not my voice" he lied
"Officer Jenkins, I already called your chief" Elroy said "Lock him up but I would like to speak to him before he gets a trial in court"
"You called the chief?" The officer scoffed and is fellow officers let out skims of laughter, Elroy didn't flinch "How can a kid like you call our chief and give orders like you're some big shot" he added and the whole room was filled with laughter of mockery.
But just then a phone rang, the police officer took up the phone and suddenly the smile on his faded "Yes sir" he said aloud, without much explanation I could already understand what was happening, the stench of the rich strikes yet again.
"You're the Elroy Vans" officer Jenkins stated, his voice shaking, the place went silent, he just had to use his influence to get what he wants, I rolled my eyes. "I'll do as instructed" he continued, then turned to the unknown man "keep him detained" with that, he looked at Elroy and I "I apologise for my rudeness earlier, it wasn't my intention to mock you" he said.
They were all the same, they all succumb to the thought, smell and presence of money even when it's demeaning to their character.
"You and the miss can go" he said, quickly dismissing us. I didn't wait for him to finish speaking, I had already left the building, heading straight home.
"Evelyn.. please where are you going?" he said loudly behind me "Please let me take you home at least" he held onto my hand, I whisked his hand away, disgusted by his abuse of power, there truly wasn't any need for him to do what he did. I had evidence that the man was the criminal.
"Do you always have to show the world that you have the money?" I blurted out
"I just wanted it to be over so you could go home" he explained "I don't want you getting stre.."
"I get it, you want it to be easier, but what if you're not there?" I asked with tears trickling down my face "What if the only way out is by persevering? You don't always have to use your money to find your way out of things. sometimes it's unfair to the innocent" I cried
"But he wasn't innocent, he could've killed you if it went south and he can do more if he's out without a warning" he replied, pointing to the building "I want him to suffer for making you so frightened"
"Why do you even care? why? Your parents probably want someone better, younger and on the same social class as you, I shouldn't matter so why do you care?! "
"Because if anything happens to you, I don't think I can go on living" he paused "Can't you see Evelyn? I love you" he walked towards me "And losing you would mean losing a part of me" he took up my hand "And I don't think I can live with that"
Neither can I
I pressed my lips onto his, taking his face in my hands, I felt his lips as his hands caressed my waist.
I’m truly sorry Mr Vans but your son might be the man for me
