Stella’s POV
“Are you going to tell us or do you just want to make fun of us?”
Dre was beginning to get impatient. Patience had never been his strongest suit. On seeing Elena shaking her leg, I guessed it wasn’t hers’ either. The only difference was that she couldn’t voice her concerns. How could she?
“Okay, I’m sorry, I just wanted to ease the tension a bit so we can all be clear-headed when making a decision. I’ll hit the nail on the head this time.”
Elena closed her eyes and kept her hands together as if saying a prayer, with both elbows on her knees. Andre on the other hand took a deep breath. It was my signal to go on with whatever I had to say.
“We were right, Elena,” I began. “Detective Ben confirmed all of our suspicions.”
“They were guilty?” Dre asked.
“Yes, they are,” I answered. “After a series of investigations, it was seen that the brakes of your car didn’t just fail, Elena. Someone tampered with it. It was a deliberate action to ensure that whosoever was in that car would be bound to have an accident.”
“What if it wasn’t them?” Elena asked. “What if someone else did that to get rid of me? Is there anything to show that they were the ones that did that?”
“Did any one have access to your car except your husband?” I asked her.
She paused a bit, probably reflecting on what I had just said. If no one else had access to the car, then it was highly probable that he was the culprit.
“Well, I’ve heard stories of people breaking into the cars of others. I heard they use wires and sharp objects to gain access.”
“And you think that’s what happened?” Dre asked her.
“I’m only saying it’s a possibility. It’s something that can happen, isn’t it?”
“Well, Elena, I think you should be a little open to the possibility that it could have been them too. That way, when we get the facts out, you’d be able to see things without any sentiments. Can you do that?”
“Sure.”
She didn’t sound so convincing, but it was a good start. I had enough to show her that she had been living with people who wanted her dead.
“It might also interest you to know that the officer was also in contact with our family doctor…”
“Dr Finn?” Dre interrupted, which made me glare at him. I didn’t like being interrupted for any reason and he knew it. Yet, I could understand why he had to do that.
“The one and only! He showed the detective results of the tests and it was confirmed that the food you ate was drugged. The person who served you must have done that to weaken you so you won’t be able to call out your wolf. These people really wanted you dead. Who was it that made breakfast?”
“Daisy… It was Daisy. I was very glad she did that as I was so weak and hungry. How could she do this?” She held her head in her hands and bowed her head. She trusted them, and that was how they chose to treat her.
Andre put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“I’m glad you’re beginning to see the bigger picture, but if you think this is the end, then you’re highly mistaken,” I said, smoothening invisible wrinkles from my jeans on my thighs and clearing my throat. I knew this particular news was going to be so unexpected.
“When did you say that Daisy returned to the country?” I asked.
“About six months ago.”
“I see. You did mention that she has been helping your husband with the issues he’s having with his company, yes?”
“Yes.”
“It might interest you to know that Daisy had a hand in the debt crises of your husband if I can still call him that. She had it all planned out so she could find her way back to him. Here, have a look.”
I handed my phone over to Elena who scrolled through the email with her mouth wide open. It must have felt like a dream. Yet, it was her reality. She had been betrayed by people who she thought were on her side; her dear husband and her best friend.
“How could they have done this to me? What did I ever do to deserve this? All I did was love Leo with everything in me. How could he do this to me?”
She handed the phone over to me and cried so hard. Andre reached out to her and held her hands. “Please, take it easy. It’s gonna be alright,” he said to her, drying her tears with his hands. Was this my son though? He had been so cold and indifferent to everyone for a while? When did he suddenly become a softie? I couldn’t explain it, but I had longed to see this concerned look on his face ever since Ella died.
“Now is the time to tell us what you want, Elena,” I continued. “You can remember that I told you that you’d have a big decision to make, right? Well, this is that time. Would you want to head back to your place and expose those beasts with the evidence that you now have or do you have other ideas in mind?”
Suddenly, Elena had a look on her face that could only be described as revenge. She wiped off the tears left on her cheeks and wore a frown that suggested nothing good. “I’ll make them pay. I’ll make them all pay!” She screamed. I was taken aback by this side of her. She had finally had enough. “They’ll pay for betraying my trust and trying to get rid of me. My revenge would be even crueller. I’ll test them from the inside and they wouldn’t even know what hit them. I swear by the goddess, they’ll pay.”
I was glad. I was sick and tired of seeing women who were always so weak. I loved that she was willing to fight; to show them that they messed with the wrong person. Who sets up an accident to lose wide and child? How far could a man go?
“I’ll help you, Elena,” I said, much to the delight of my son Andre. “Yet, you must know that I’m doing this because I wouldn’t want any woman to face what you’ve faced. When all this is done, we’ll have to go our separate ways. You’re not here to replace my daughter.”
“I’ll make them pay.”
