BY THE TIME OUR summer terms ended, we’d established a pattern of sleeping at his house or mine as the notion arose, and each of us had a fair amount of clothing in the other’s closet. Nearly two months of daily attendance at the Y had visibly improved David’s confidence in his appearance—he didn’t quite strut across the room with his towel over his shoulder, but he wasn’t nearly as shy in the locker and shower rooms as he’d been on that first visit.
Against my better judgment, I’d allowed David to persuade me to accompany him to Charlotte for a weekend visit with his family. Neither of us was ‘out’ to our families, so he paved the way by referring to me as someone whom he’d met at church and with whom he had discovered a military connection.
