Chapter 33: Noisy Decline More grunts followed and then stopped and started as my descent quickened. I took step by step, falling into the depths of the unfinished basement. Stone walls with chunks of lumber surrounded me. Light from upstairs cascaded into the basement. The wooden steps creaked under my weight, one by one, something I couldn’t prevent. Whomever inhibited the basement heard me. Whether it was Miller or Jax, or even both, they knew of my arrival because of that noisy decline.
