Evelyn did not expect Lucian’s invitation to be… casual.
“No meetings,” he said as they exited Vale Tower. “No assistants. No agendas.”
She glanced at him. “You’re asking me out?”
Lucian paused for half a second. “I’m suggesting a change of environment.”
That was not a denial.
They ended up at a quiet restaurant tucked away from the city’s glare—dim lights, muted conversations, the kind of place powerful people went when they didn’t want to be seen performing power.
Evelyn sat across from him, posture relaxed but alert.
“Environment analysis complete,” the system chimed lazily.
“Low threat. High aesthetic value. Male lead visual rating: dangerously distracting.”
Evelyn nearly choked on her water.
Behave, she warned silently.
“Correction,” the system replied.
“I am behaving. You are the one experiencing elevated heart rate.”
She ignored it.
Lucian studied her quietly. “You seem… less guarded.”
“This isn’t a battlefield,” Evelyn said. “Yet.”
His lips curved faintly. “Everything becomes one eventually.”
Food arrived. Conversation drifted—not about markets or enemies, but smaller things. Preferences. Habits. Silence that didn’t need filling.
Lucian watched the way she listened, the way she processed before speaking.
“You don’t relax easily,” he said.
Evelyn met his gaze. “Neither do you.”
A pause.
“Compatibility analysis running,” the system announced cheerfully.
“Conclusion: mutual control issues detected. Probability of emotional combustion: high.”
Stop analyzing him, Evelyn thought sharply.
“Denied,” the system replied.
“He is already analyzing you.”
Lucian leaned back slightly. “You went quiet.”
“Just thinking,” Evelyn said smoothly.
“Dangerous habit,” he murmured.
Later, as they stepped outside, the city air cool against her skin, Lucian stopped walking.
“You know,” he said, voice lower now, “this is the first time in years I’ve done something unnecessary.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Then why do it?”
Lucian’s gaze lingered. “Because control is exhausting.”
Something shifted.
Not surrender.
Understanding.
“Observation,” the system added gently.
“You are smiling. This is new.”
Evelyn didn’t deny it.
For one brief moment, between wars and empires, she allowed herself to simply exist.
But even as she did—
She knew this calm was temporary.
And she was ready for what came next.
