Chapter 5: Sparks Beneath Ice

358 Words
Lucian Vale did not test people often. Most revealed themselves too quickly—through greed, insecurity, or desperation. Evelyn Ashford revealed nothing at all, and that alone unsettled him. Their second meeting took place in a quieter space, far from the summit’s glittering chaos. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the city below like a living map of power. Evelyn stood near the glass, hands relaxed at her sides, posture elegant yet alert. Lucian watched her without pretense. “You’re calm,” he said. “Too calm for someone standing where you are.” Evelyn didn’t turn immediately. “I’ve stood in worse places,” she replied evenly. That answer lingered between them. Lucian began deliberately—posing hypothetical market crashes, ethical gray zones, hostile takeovers disguised as rescues. Each question was sharpened, designed to expose hesitation or moral vanity. Evelyn answered without pause. She spoke of sacrifice as calculation, not cruelty. Of risk as inevitability, not fear. Of power as responsibility, not indulgence. “You don’t think like a financier,” Lucian said at last, studying her profile. “I don’t think like someone who’s never lost,” Evelyn replied. For the first time, Lucian felt something twist beneath his composure. Not attraction—something deeper. Recognition. “People like you,” he said slowly, “tend to destroy others without realizing it.” Evelyn finally turned to face him. Her gaze was level, unflinching. “I’m very aware,” she said. “That’s why I choose carefully.” Silence stretched. Outside, the city pulsed with ambition and decay. Inside, an unspoken understanding formed. Lucian realized she wasn’t reckless. She wasn’t naive. And she wasn’t pretending to be strong. She was strong. When she gathered her coat, Lucian spoke again. “You could have asked me for help.” Evelyn smiled faintly—cool, distant, honest. “I don’t need saving,” she said. “I need room.” Lucian watched her leave, a rare tension tightening his chest. For the first time in years, he wondered—not whether someone could stand beside him… …but whether someone might one day stand against him. And whether he would welcome it.
