The charity gala was loud in the way expensive things always were.
Crystal glasses clinked. Cameras flashed. Smiles were stretched just a little too tight.
Evelyn stood at Lucian’s side, dressed in black—simple, clean, sharp. No excess. No weakness. Her presence alone drew eyes, whispers trailing behind her like smoke.
Lucian leaned in slightly. “You’re calm.”
“I’m prepared,” Evelyn replied.
System: She means armed. Emotionally. Relax.
Across the room, Evelyn spotted him.
Marcus Hale.
One of the men who had laughed when the original Evelyn Ashford begged for help. One of the men who had quietly helped push her into ruin.
He was talking. Bragging. Like always.
System: Oh. This guy. I hate his face already.
Evelyn exhaled slowly.
Let’s begin.
She stepped away from Lucian, moving through the crowd with easy grace. Heads turned. Conversations paused.
Marcus noticed her too late.
“Evelyn Ashford?” he said, surprise flashing across his face before turning smug. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”
“I’m sure,” she replied pleasantly.
System: He’s sweating. I can tell. Gross.
Marcus chuckled. “I heard you’ve been… ambitious lately.”
“Successful,” Evelyn corrected.
People nearby began to listen.
Marcus smirked. “Careful. Big moves tend to end badly.”
Evelyn tilted her head. “Funny. That’s what you said last time.”
Silence.
She lifted her phone and tapped once.
The screen behind the stage flickered—then changed.
Documents. Numbers. Transactions.
Marcus went pale.
System: And here we have Exhibit A through Oh-You’re-Done.
Gasps rippled through the room.
Evelyn’s voice stayed calm. “You used charity funds to cover private losses. You blamed it on a junior associate. He was fired.”
Marcus stammered. “This—this is illegal—”
“So was what you did,” Evelyn said gently. “I just made it visible.”
Lucian watched from across the room, eyes dark, sharp.
Marcus tried to speak again. Failed.
Security approached.
System: Bye. Don’t trip on your way out.
As Marcus was escorted away, the room buzzed.
Evelyn turned—and met Lucian’s gaze.
He walked toward her slowly.
“That was… thorough,” he said.
“I don’t repeat mistakes,” Evelyn replied.
Lucian studied her like she was something rare. Dangerous. Valuable.
“I’m glad you’re on my side,” he said quietly.
System: SAME. Very same.
Evelyn smiled—small, real.
For the first time, she didn’t feel like she was proving herself.
She already had.
And everyone else was just catching up.
