The air in the room solidified.
Tina's face went pale. She instinctively pulled Phoebe closer, shielding her.
"Rena, Rena..."
Nathan stepped forward, his voice dry. "What are you doing here? Weren't you supposed to be at the office..."
"What am I doing here?" I cut him off. My own calm surprised me. "My daughter was brought to this hospital for surgery. Why wouldn't her mother be here?"
"No. You've got it wrong."
He was desperate to explain, a fine sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Sunny was just here for a routine follow-up. Phoebe's case is different... she's special. I was just..."
"Just what?"
