The noise from the corridor and Phoebe's crying inside the room tangled together into something unbearable. Tina scrambled to comfort her daughter and got shoved away harder each time she tried. Nathan stood motionless, face pale. I held Sunny, rubbing slow circles on her back, and murmured in her ear. "Sweetheart. It's time to go." Sunny buried her face against my neck, her small shoulders still shuddering. I didn't spare Nathan another glance. I turned and carried my daughter out through the people clustered at the door. At the elevator, I looked back one last time. Through the open doorway I could see Nathan trying to reach Phoebe, who was still crying. Tina hovered uselessly beside them.
