Amelia’s POV:
A knot of fear clenches tightly in my gut when Henry raps on the window. I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself before lowering the glass.
A vein throbs in Henry's temple as he meets my gaze. "You..." he hisses, his voice laced with venom. I cut him off before he can utter more.
“I found my mate, so I can’t marry Arthur Moore,” I spit out, leaning over to clutch the Uber driver’s arm, “he is my mate!”
Henry’s nostril flares with anger. He glances over at the driver and his luxury car, and then sneers, “So, where’s your mark? I don’t see one on his neck either. Don't try to fool me, I'm not stupid!”
Cold sweat slides down my back as I search for an answer in my head.
“Alpha Henry,” the driver interjects, his voice deep and steady. “Mia doesn’t lie. I’m her mate, and by my family’s tradition, we must be officially mated before leaving our mark.” His poise radiates a sense of safety, calming the jitters that have gripped me.
However, hearing Mia’s name, Henry narrows his eyes into slits.
I fidget in the seat, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I don’t use my real name on Uber, and everyone in town knows about this d*mn wedding. The driver clearly thinks I’m Mia.
“Which pack are you from?” Henry presses. The moment he finishes speaking, a big, burly man appears. He is like a mountain, towering over Henry and his men. His black t-shirt stretches taut across his tattooed arms, a swirling design that seems to writhe with unspoken danger.
Eyeing him, Henry instantly puts on a big warm smile, looking like he’s going to kiss his ass. “Beta Alex, sorry for the delay. Please wait a moment. My daughter is throwing a tantrum right now. It’ll be alright soon.”
I force myself not to roll my eyes. Beta Alex, however, seems to notice something in the car and turns to look at me. A flinch escapes me. It’s the driver's gentle pat on my hand that soothes my nerves.
“Is that so?” Alex says, his voice flat. “Isn’t Ms. Mia claiming she already has a mate? How can our Alpha marry a mated woman?” He shifts his stern gaze to Henry, the anger in his tone undeniable. Werewolf hearing picks up everything.
“She isn’t mated, Beta Alex. See, she has no mark. She’s lying.” Henry rushes to explain.
“I can’t risk Alpha Arthur’s reputation!” Alex snaps at Henry before returning to me, “Ms. Mia, why don’t you and your mate get a marriage license to prove your relationship? Then I can go back and give the lowdown to Alpha Arthur.”
My thoughts are racing. If I reveal my true identity, Henry will be pissed off and may endanger Grandma Amanda.
Desperate, I have to beg the driver with my eyes. Thankfully, he nods!
“Yeah, that’s our plan too,” he answers for me. His lips quirk up in a charming smile, showing dazzling white teeth. My breath stops for a millisecond, but then I tell myself it’s not the proper time to think about other things.
Henry shoots stare daggers at me. I roll my eyes and close the window. The engine revs and the car pulls away, heading for the Werewolf Council House.
“Thank you for your help, Mr. Driver,” I say to the driver and he shrugs while smiling. It warms a tiny corner of my heart, even as bitterness churns within me. Why can a stranger be so kind, while my father treats me like sh*t?
“What’s your name? Sorry, I tripped a while ago and broke my phone. I can’t see your name on the APP.”
“No worries. I’m Precious Harley,” he answers.
“Okay. Mr. Harley, it’s just an act. You can reject me later. I know you’ll meet your fated mate in the future and I wish the moment comes sooner. When it comes, I won’t get in the way, I promise.” Everyone longs for their fated mate, me too. Even though I'm wolfless, I can't help but wonder if there's still a chance for me to find mine.
“It won’t be a problem. And you can call me Precious,” he replies kindly, then focuses on the road.
“Here we are!” Precious exclaims as we pull up to the Council House. He releases his seatbelt and hops out of the car. I unbuckle mine, then fumble with the handle.
I gingerly press here and touch there, but the door stays still.
Geez, can anyone tell me how to open this bloody fancy door?
Just as I’m at a loss, the door swings open. Precious holds the door open with one hand and reaches for me with the other.
Wow! The service!
Now I worry about how much tip I should give him later.
I hesitate for a moment before placing my hand in his palm and getting out. My jaw drops when taking in the scene outside.
Besides Beta Alex and Henry, a long line of luxury cars is parked neatly in front of the House, with a row of men in black and white suits standing next to them. I know immediately they're all from Blood Shadow Pack. The intimidating aura they radiate is unmistakable, the same kind I feel from Beta Alex.
While I’m distracted, one of Henry's warriors suddenly lunges at me, tearing a large piece of my back clothes and exposing my crimson birthmark. A scream rips from my throat as the fabric tears, and my hand flies up, trying to clutch at the exposed skin. My vision swims with a mixture of shock and anger.
In a fleeting moment, Precious yanks off his suit jacket and drapes it over my shoulders. His strong arm engulfs my shaking body. As I look up, I meet a gaze filled with raw power, a storm brewing within their depths. To say he is furious is an understatement.
Arghhh! A painful scream follows.
Beta Alex grabs that warrior’s wrist and snaps it, shoving the man to the floor. Henry’s smile freezes, his face pale.
“Cut his hand.” Alex’s order leaves him paler.
“What’s the noise?” An Elder comes out to check up.
Ignoring him, Alex’s men proceed to cut off the warrior’s hand.
Precious moves a bit, using his broad chest to block my view from the violence unfolding, but a horrifying scream tears through the air, raising goosebumps on my skin.
The Council House is a place of the highest authority, where no one would dare to misbehave. I can't fathom how brazen and formidable Blood Shadow Pack must be to resort to violence in such a place, not to mention in front of an Elder’s face.
I don’t feel sorry for that warrior though. He earned his punishment.
Arthur Moore...
The thought of Blood Shadow’s Alpha sends chilling shivers down my spine.
“Shall we?” Precious’s deep voice whispers in my ear. He takes a step back, his hand reaching out to usher me inside the House.
He looks so easy and cool, in stark contrast to my jelly legs.
What if Alpha Arthur finds out my trick, will he spare my life? Will Precious get into trouble too?
I’m so overwhelmed that I feel rooted to the spot. Should I continue the plan?
