Lieutenant Commander Bradley James Wright was assigned to the USS Augusta when he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1938. The ship was in China when he went aboard and he thought it was exciting. But it was deployed to the east coast of the United States early in 1941. After Pearl Harbor he became unhappy that he was doing North Atlantic convoy duty while his twin brother, Harold, was seeing action on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Bradley tried to get transferred to a warship in the Pacific, but his request was refused. He blamed his father, who was a retired, but still influential, admiral; he thought his father wanted to keep him out of the Pacific because Harold had barely survived the sinking of his ship at Midway.
