Chapter 3: The First Move

1303 Words
The night was still as Selena stood on the edge of the cliff, gazing down at the sprawling city below. The darkened skyline of Vailis stretched out before her like an intricate map, each flicker of light from the distant windows illuminating the labyrinth of secrets hidden within. Vailis had once been a city of prosperity, a beacon of magic and power. Now, it was a decaying monument to the corruption that had overtaken it. From this vantage point, she could see the tallest building, the Kael family mansion, where Rael and Mira now resided. The power that had once belonged to her family, the power she had been promised, had been stolen. They thought they could break her, cast her aside and live without consequence. But tonight, Selena had come to show them the cost of betrayal. She had spent weeks tracking their every move, learning the inner workings of their household, their defenses. Rael and Mira had become complacent, thinking themselves untouchable. But they had underestimated one thing: they had underestimated her. Selena clenched her fists, her fingers tingling with the raw energy of the magic that surged within her. The dark power she had unlocked in the temple had altered her in ways she couldn’t yet fully comprehend. The emptiness she had once felt had been replaced with a hunger, a burning desire for revenge that had begun to consume her. She wasn’t the woman she once was. She was stronger, darker, and far more dangerous. The winds howled as she descended the cliffside, her steps calculated and precise. The city below, so full of life and chaos, was oblivious to the storm that was about to hit. She moved through the streets like a shadow, unnoticed by the few who walked the alleys at this late hour. No one would stand in her way. Not tonight. Selena’s breath quickened as she approached the mansion. Guards stood at the entrance, their spears glinting under the moonlight. They were no match for her. With a flick of her wrist, she sent a blast of energy that knocked them off their feet, sending them crashing into the ground. The sound was muffled by the magic that enveloped them, and in a matter of moments, they lay unconscious in the dirt. She slipped through the gates effortlessly, a presence as quiet as the wind itself. The mansion loomed ahead, its grand architecture standing like a testament to its owners’ wealth. The doors, heavy and reinforced with wards of protection, were no obstacle for her. She could feel the faint pulse of magic on the other side, the residual traces of the enchantments Mira and Rael had put in place to keep out intruders. Selena smirked. They had no idea who they were dealing with. With a wave of her hand, the wards fell silent, and the doors creaked open. She stepped inside, her heels clicking on the polished marble floors, each step echoing through the vast, empty hallways. The grandeur of the mansion didn’t impress her anymore. It was a symbol of everything she had lost, everything they had stolen. The gold-leafed walls, the velvet tapestries, the extravagant furniture—none of it mattered. Tonight, it would all burn. She moved through the mansion, the silence around her oppressive. Her senses were heightened, every creak of the floorboards, every whispered breath from behind the walls, amplified in her mind. She could feel their presence, the faint energy of Rael and Mira as they resided in their chambers. They were still unaware, still blind to the storm that was about to break. At the end of the hallway, a set of double doors opened into a large study. Selena could hear voices inside—Rael’s unmistakable laugh, Mira’s calculated tone. They were discussing their plans, no doubt, making decisions on how to further solidify their control over the city. They hadn’t even realized she had returned. Selena took a deep breath, savoring the moment. She had no intention of sneaking up on them. No, she wanted them to see her, to understand that she was not the weak woman they had thought they could discard. She was power incarnate. She threw the doors open with a force that sent them crashing against the walls, the sound echoing through the grand room. Rael and Mira froze, their eyes wide with shock. Rael, tall and broad-shouldered, looked every bit the confident nobleman he had always been. Mira, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders, stood beside him, her cold eyes narrowing as she took in the sight of Selena. "Selena…" Rael's voice was strained, disbelief written across his face. "I thought you were dead." "You wished I was," Selena said, her voice cold, every word laced with venom. She stepped forward, her presence commanding, her power radiating from her like a dark aura. "But here I am." Mira took a step back, her eyes flicking to the door as if considering an escape. But there was nowhere to run. Selena was already inside, and there was no way out for either of them. "How?" Mira demanded, her tone sharp. "How are you alive? We made sure—" "You thought you could erase me?" Selena interrupted, her voice low and dangerous. "You thought you could throw me away and never face the consequences?" Rael, ever the diplomat, tried to steady himself, though the fear in his eyes was undeniable. "We never wanted this, Selena," he said, his voice faltering. "It was just a mistake. A misunderstanding—" "A misunderstanding?" Selena echoed, her laugh bitter. "You betrayed me. You stole everything from me, and you think you can get away with it?" Before either of them could respond, Selena raised her hand, and the air in the room seemed to shimmer. Dark energy coiled around her fingers, crackling with raw power. Rael and Mira were pushed back, their bodies thrown against the walls with bone-jarring force. The impact left them gasping for breath, their hearts racing in terror. Selena was no longer the woman they had once known. She was an embodiment of vengeance, a force they couldn’t hope to control. Rael struggled to his feet, reaching for his own magic, but Selena was faster. She had become something more than human—something far darker than either of them had ever imagined. "You’ll regret this," she whispered, her voice barely a breath. With a flick of her wrist, a bolt of dark energy shot forward, slamming into Rael's chest with the force of a thousand storms. He gasped as the wind was knocked out of him, his body slamming into the wall once more, the crack of his ribs unmistakable. Selena didn’t pause to savor the moment. She wasn’t here for pity, for mercy. She was here for one thing: revenge. Mira, panicked, moved toward the door, but Selena was already there. She grabbed Mira by the throat, lifting her off the ground with one hand, her fingers tightening like a vice. Mira’s eyes bulged as she struggled to breathe, her hands clawing at Selena’s wrist in a futile attempt to free herself. "Did you think I would let you get away with it?" Selena asked, her voice low and filled with venom. Mira managed to whisper, barely able to speak. "Please… don’t… do this…" Selena’s lips curled into a wicked smile. "It’s too late for that." With a brutal twist of her hand, she sent Mira flying across the room, the force of the blow leaving the woman unconscious. The silence that followed was deafening. Rael and Mira lay defeated, their bodies battered and broken. Selena stood over them, her chest heaving with the intensity of her emotions. Tonight, the first part of her revenge had been fulfilled. But this was only the beginning.
