Chapter 3

Stella stepped into the grand foyer, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor, each sound swallowed by the hugeness of the space. The huge ceilings, decorated with detailed large, fancy lighting fixtures, seemed to stretch endlessly, and the soft golden glow of the lights covered the room in an almost dreamlike quality. But the air felt thick and terrible, and the weight of Adrian's confusing smile clung to her like a shadow. Kelvin moved with purpose, his long steps long and deliberate as he led her deeper into the big house. "Your room is on the second floor," he said without turning, his voice calm but firm. Stella's look quickly moved around, taking in the rich beauty. Dark wood paneling, velvet drapes, and walls lined with artwork that screamed old money surrounded her. The big house wasn't just a home; it was a (large, very secure place), a harsh reminder of the world she had just entered--a world where power and secrets waited (in a creepy way) behind every corner. Behind her, Adrian's soft laugh echoed faintly, sending a chill down her spine. She quickly looked over her shoulder to find him leaning against the doorframe, his sharp eyes watching and following her every move. "Good luck, Stella," he said, his tone dripping with joke. "You're going to need it." Kelvin stopped suddenly, turning to face his brother. The tension in the room shifted, crackling like static electricity. "Adrian," Kelvin said (without kindness), his gray eyes hardening. "Don't you have somewhere else to be?" Adrian's small smile widened, but he pushed off the doorframe and raised his hands in fake (giving up in a fight). "Relax, brother. I'm just getting to know your... lovely bride." His look flicked back to Stella, and she felt exposed like he could see through every layer of her calmness. Kelvin stepped closer to Adrian, his voice dropping low. "Stay out of this, Adrian. You know the terms of the agreement." Adrian's smile paused, just for a moment, before he turned on his heel and disappeared down a dark hallway, leaving behind a disturbing silence. Stella released a breath she hadn't (understood) that she'd been holding. "What was that about?" she asked, her voice barely steady. Kelvin's jaw tightened, but he didn't answer immediately. "You don't need to concern yourself with Adrian," he said finally, his tone short (with words) and rude. "He's... complicated." Complicated. The word felt like a statement (that says that something is much less than it is), but Stella knew better than to press further. —_: They climbed up the grand staircase, Kelvin's commanding presence filling the space as he led her to a set of double doors. He pushed them open to show a beautiful bedroom that was both impressive and beautiful. A huge cloth covering the bed ruled the room, draped in silk and velvet, and a crystal large, fancy lighting fixture cast shimmering patterns across the walls. "This is your room," Kelvin said, stepping aside to let her in. Stella waited at the dividing line, her fingers tightening around the handle of her suitcase. The room was stunning, yes, but it felt (emotionally cool and not friendly) like it belonged to someone else. "Thank you," she whispered, stepping inside. Kelvin watched her for a moment, his look unreadable. "If you need anything, Sophia will help you." He paused, his expression softening ever so (a) little. "And, Stella... this arrangement may not have been your choice, but I'll do my best to make it... manageable." Stella blinked, surprised by the faint trace of warmth in his voice. But before she could respond, he turned and left, the door clicking shut behind him. —_: The silence of the room pressed down on her as she unpacked her things, her movements slow and deliberate. She tried to focus on the (things that were important now), but her mind kept wandering back to Adrian's words, Kelvin's confusing behavior, and the strange, suffocating energy that seemed to fill the big house. Just as she placed the last of her clothes in the drawer, a soft knock sounded at the door. Her heart jumped. "Come in," she called, her voice steady (even though there is the existence of) the unease that prickled at her skin. Sophia entered, carrying a silver tray with a teapot and a delicate china cup. Her expression remained as composed as ever. "I thought you might like some tea," Sophia said, setting the tray down on the small table by the window. "Thank you," Stella said, her voice softer now. Sophia nodded but didn't leave immediately. Instead, she stayed around by the door, her eyes flicking around the room before settling on Stella. "Be careful," Sophia said quietly, her usual (acting maturely and honestly while doing an excellent job) giving way to something almost... human. Stella frowned. "Careful? Of what?" Sophia waited, her lips pressing into a thin line. "This house has its secrets, Miss Monroe. And so, do its residents. Just... watch your back." Before Stella could respond, Sophia slipped out of the room, leaving her alone with her thoughts and a growing sense of unease. —_: Later that night, Stella lay awake in the huge bed, the silk sheets cool against her skin. The big house was weirdly silent, save for the occasional creak of the old wood and the distant hum of the wind outside. She stared up at the (cloth covering the bed), her mind racing with questions. What secrets was this house hiding? What had Sophia meant? And why did Adrian's small smile feel like a warning rather than a mean, teasing statement? A faint noise pulled her from her thoughts. She sat up, her pulse quickening. The sound came again--a soft, almost invisible creak, like footsteps on the floorboards. Stella's breath hitched as she swung her legs over the side of the bed. The room was dark, the shadows stretching and moving with the faint light of the moon streaming through the curtains. The sound grew louder, and closer until it was just outside her door. Her heart pounded as she stared at the handle, half expecting it to turn. And then, it did. The door creaked open, showing a figure outlined in the faint light. "Who's there?" Stella demanded, her voice shaking with fear as she moved quickly to her feet. The figure stepped inside, and as they moved into the light; Stella's blood ran cold. It wasn't Kelvin. It was Adrian. His smile was sharper than ever, his dark eyes sparkling with something she couldn't place. "Didn't Kelvin warn you about the dangers of this house?" he said, his voice low and almost insulting. Stella backed away, her heart hammering in her chest. "What are you doing here?" Adrian's smile widened, his presence filling the room like an animal (who hunts and kills others) closing in on its (hunted animal). "I just wanted to welcome you properly," he said, taking another step closer. Before Stella could react, the sound of a door slamming echoed through the big house, followed by Kelvin's voice, sharp and extremely angry, calling her name. Adrian's smile faded, replaced by a cold, dangerous look that sent a shake from fear down her spine. "Looks like the fun is just getting started," Adrian whispered his words a chilling promise as he stepped closer.
