The Contract Kiss
The photograph turned their private tension into a public obsession. By breakfast, television commentators were analyzing the angle of Lucien’s body, Sofia’s expression, and the distance between their hands as though they were studying race telemetry. Sofia tried to ignore the coverage, but every screen in the penthouse seemed determined to remind her that millions of strangers were watching, judging their every gesture, and inventing feelings neither had admitted aloud to each other. Lucien appeared less bothered, although the tightness around his eyes told her he was calculating the consequences.
Margaux arrived with one piece of good news and three pieces of bad news. The good news was that Sofia’s engineering comments had generated serious commercial interest from sponsors who wanted Vantari to associate itself with innovation rather than scandal. The bad news was that Elias had requested a formal board review of Lucien’s engagement, and another executive had leaked documents suggesting Sofia’s father had received unexplained payments from Henri. Sofia took the papers and felt the old anger return immediately.
She asked Lucien whether the payments were real. He said the records appeared authentic, but authenticity did not establish wrongdoing. Sofia told him that was exactly what someone said when they wanted to protect a guilty person. Lucien looked at her with visible frustration and said, “I am trying to protect you from conclusions built by people who have been lying for twenty years.”
The disagreement followed them into the crowded paddock. Sofia refused to walk beside him during the morning media session, which immediately created another story. Reporters asked whether the engagement was collapsing, whether Sofia regretted signing the contract, and whether Lucien had lied about her father. Lucien answered none of the questions until one journalist accused Sofia of using Mateo’s death to manipulate Vantari.
Sofia stepped toward the microphone, but Lucien reached it first. He said the journalist had no evidence to make such an accusation and that anyone questioning Sofia’s integrity could address him directly. The statement stunned the media because Lucien was not defending his fiancée for the cameras; he was protecting her reputation when doing so could have increased scrutiny of his own family. Sofia watched him finish the interview. She realized she was angrier at herself than at him.
Later, she found Lucien in the garage studying race data. She told him she had not needed him to answer for her, and he replied that he knew. Sofia asked why. Lucien said, “Because your name should not have to carry the weight of my family’s sins.”
The sentence softened something guarded inside her, unexpectedly, despite her anger. She told him she still did not trust him completely, and he said he did not expect her to. Then he asked whether she would trust him enough to attend the evening sponsor event beside him. Sofia agreed because the contract required it, although both of them knew the answer had stopped being entirely about the contract.
The event was held aboard a private yacht anchored near the Monaco harbor that evening. Music drifted across the deck while guests moved between tables, and Sofia spent most of the evening speaking with engineers and investors who were genuinely interested in her work. Lucien stayed nearby without hovering, but every time someone approached Sofia too aggressively, his attention sharpened. When Alessandro arrived and asked Sofia to dance, Lucien said nothing.
Sofia accepted the invitation partly because she wanted to see whether Lucien would react to Alessandro that evening. Alessandro was charming and respectful, but Sofia found herself noticing the empty space where Lucien had been standing moments earlier. When the song ended, she returned to the table and discovered Lucien waiting there. He told her he had received a message from the team that could not wait.
Sofia followed him below deck, where he showed her a forged document connecting Mateo to an alleged technology theft. The signature looked convincing, but Sofia immediately noticed a technical notation her father would never have used. She told Lucien the document was fake because the engineering terminology belonged to a system developed years later. Lucien stared at her, then smiled for the first time that evening.
“That is why I chose you,” he said. Sofia told him he had already used that line once, and he answered that this time he meant something different. Before she could ask what he meant, the yacht lurched slightly as photographers approached from another vessel. Security moved toward them, and Lucien grabbed Sofia’s hand.
They hurried upstairs together, only to find a wall of cameras waiting. Reporters shouted questions about the leaked documents and the engagement, while Lucien tried to move Sofia toward the protected entrance. Someone pushed through the security barrier, and Sofia stumbled backward. Lucien caught her around the waist, pulled her close, and kissed her.
The kiss lasted only seconds, but it was enough to silence the entire deck. Sofia knew immediately that this was supposed to be another performance, another gesture designed to make the engagement appear convincing. Yet Lucien did not release her when the cameras began flashing, and Sofia did not step away when she realized she could.
When he finally pulled back, his expression had lost every trace of calculation. Sofia stared at him, breathless, while the crowd erupted into cheers and shouted questions. Lucien leaned close and whispered that he was sorry, but Sofia shook her head before he could finish. “Do not apologize for something you did not regret,” she said.
The words remained between them as security escorted them away. Neither spoke during the long drive back to the penthouse, because the contract had suddenly become much harder to remember. Sofia briefly touched her lips once, then lowered her hand when she realized Lucien was watching her reflection in the window. For the first time, she wondered whether Clause Eight had been written because Lucien feared falling in love, or because someone already knew he was capable of that danger.
