Chapter One

1185 Words
The sun brightly shines through a bedroom window. It’s a beautiful Wednesday morning, the sound of birds singing fills the room. An alarm clock goes off. “BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!” It stops. Luna yawns. “Luna! Get up! You have school in an hour!” a voice yells from downstairs. Luna gets off her bed and walks downstairs to the kitchen. “Well you’re a mess today.” another voice says teasingly. “Mom made your favorite.” “Really?! Thanks V. I didn’t know!” Luna says sarcastically. V laughs. “Anyways, thanks for making waffles mom.” She smiles and hugs her. Luna’s mom smiles and takes the seat on one end of the table next to her mom. In front of her are her favorite waffles topped with strawberries, whipped cream, and syrup on a plate. Her mom drinks her daily coffee and eats her scrambled eggs while reading a book about Robin Hood. And next to Luna is a plate with a burnt piece of bread on top of it. “Veronica . . . did you burn your toast again? This is what? Like the 10th time? Don’t think that I wouldn’t notice. You know I always can in some way. How do you keep burning it!? It’s literally one of the easiest things to make!” Luna laughs. Veronica smiles, feeling ashamed “Yeah, how could you tell? I think I didn’t burn it that much this time. At least I’m improving with my life. Unlike you. When are you going to start?” “Hey! I’m trying to work on it. You know I don’t have the confidence to do so. Especially with you and mom always pushing me to get out of my comfort zone. At least dad lets me go at my own pace. Also, aren't you only 2 years older than me? Anyway, to answer your question about the toast, one, I could smell it on my way down, and two, it’s right in front of me on your plate. Don’t you think that would’ve been obvious?” Veronica laughs “Okay, you got me.” She sits down next to Luna at the table and begins to eat her burnt piece of toast. After a little while, as Luna’s mom was washing her dishes, her mom says “You better eat quick. You don’t want to be late for your first day.” Luna looks at the clock, eyes widening. “Is that really the time!? I gotta get ready! Ack!” she shoves the rest of her waffle in her mouth, then brings her plate and fork over to the sink and places them on the counter. V laughs and goes to wash her own plate. “I’ll wash them later. I promise! I’ll do them as soon as I’m back from school!” Luna runs up to her room. What to wear? What to wear? Luna panics for a while as she tries to get ready. Ah ha! This’ll work! She gets out her black pants, socks, her favorite shirt-dress, her favorite midnight purple shoes, and gets dressed. Her shirt is a beautiful midnight blue with small silver specks that look like stars in the night sky, almost goes down to her knees, see through sleeves from the edge of the shoulders down to wrists, and midnight blue see through fabric over skirt half that goes down to her knees. Next, Luna goes into the bathroom. She brushes her hair and then her teeth. How should I do my hair today? she pauses, thinking about multiple ways to do her hair. I think I'll leave it somewhat down for today. Luna parts the front, the shortest part of her hair to the left. Then grabs the longer strands of hair near the front of her head and braids them, then pulls them back into an X and holding the two pieces together is a sparkly, Navy Blue bow. “There.” she smiles. “That looks great! Now that that’s finally done, I better pack my bag and get ready to go.” Luna goes back to her room and grabs her starry-night sky backpack. She places her sparkly black notebooks, mechanical pencils, highlighter, white eraser, her galaxy colored water bottle, gym clothes, shoes for gym, a hair brush, a few hairties, and her headphones in her bag. Then goes to grab her phone off its charger and puts on her thin black jacket. That’s better. She looks at the black watch on her wrist. “Crap! I’m going to be late.” Luna runs downstairs and says goodbye to Veronica and her mother. On her way to the bus stop, she sees about 10 kids around her age go towards the same bus stop. She puts on her black hood. The bus stops in front of them. Everyone boards. Luna finds an empty seat in the back of the bus and sits down by the window. She plugs in her headphones to her phone and presses “play”. Her playlist starts. She relaxes and looks out the window. A few stops later, the bus is almost full. A boy gets on with a girl following him. They move towards the back. The girl says something to the boy and sits next to someone in the seat across from Luna. Something touches Luna’s shoulder. She jumps and takes her headphones off. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. Can I sit here?” The boy looked shy, but sweet. “It’s fine. I guess I scare easily. Here. Let me move my backpack for you.” She said quietly as she smiled shyly. “Thanks.” he sits down next to her “I’m Jackson. What’s your name?” “Oh. Uhm. My name is Luna.” She takes her hood off. “Cool. Well, nice to meet you Luna.” they both smile. “Oh! Could you give me a minute? There’s someone who I think would love to get to know you.” “Sure.” Jackson turns to the girl across from him and whispers loud enough for the girl to hear. The bus stops. “Okay. Sorry about that. Want to wait outside for a little bit and chat?” “Sure. I’d like that. Probably mostly because you’re the first person I’ve met and actually talked to outside of my family.” They walk off the bus and wait for one another by a nearby tree. The girl eventually joins them. “This is my cousin.” Jackson says, indicating the girl. The girl waves. “Hi! I’m Kate. Nice to meet you.” “Nice to meet you too, Kate. I’m Luna.” “That’s a pretty name. I think it suits you. Want to be friends? I heard it’s your first time. Don’t worry. It’s ours too. Right Jackson?” “Yup.” Luna smiles. “I would like that.” They all smile and walk inside the large school called “Crystal Prep” while telling each other about themselves.
